Private well water
is yours
safe?

What should your well water be tested for?
1)    Bacteriological Testing (annually)

Two common types of bacteria found in water are: Total
Coliforms, which may mean surface contamination or the
well is in need of physical upgrades; and Escherichia Coli (E.
coli), which could mean that fecal matter has entered the
well. E. coli in your drinking water is an immediate health
concern and the water is not safe to drink.
2)    Chemical Testing (every 5 years)

Chemical testing looks for: nitrates, fluoride and metals
such as arsenic, lead, copper and manganese. Some metals
can have serious and long-term health effects.
If you live in an agricultural or farm area, you may also
want to test for pesticides. If you live near a gas station,
industrial area, or there is a history of chemical spills or

known contaminants in your community consider testing
for a broader combination of chemicals.
How do I get my well water tested?

For information on where to get your well water tested check with your RM or Town office, they usually have
water testing kits available at no cost.  You can run the
test at home (read the instructions carefully & follow them
exactly).
Poor water test results can be an immediate health concern. There may be a quick fix like shocking your well, or
you may need to find a long term treatment solution for
your water.
You can also hire an expert, someone who can test for
contaminants and go over your well's results with you.  You
may need a discussion about shocking your well.
If you are selling a property that has a well on it, the well
will need to be tested for potable water prior to an offer
being accepted, talk with your real estate expert about the
test and the timing of it.
Health Canada's Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water
Quality recommend maximum acceptable concentrations for a
wide range of possible contaminants in drinking water at

f your drinking/bathing/
washing water comes
f ro m a p r i v ate we ll,
it should be tested to ensure that it
is safe for you and your family to use.
Even if your neighbour's water has recently been tested
and found to be safe, it doesn't mean yours is.
Water tests reflect the recent water quality. Your water
quality may change over time and you probably won't be
aware it. Flood, drought, seasonal changes and/or extreme
weather, can potentially cause contamination. The safety
of your well water depends on surface and underground
geology, the depth and construction of the well, and other
outside factors like septic tanks, holding tanks, and/or septic fields that may pose risks for contamination. Manitoba
soil is clay permeable and the porosity underneath mixed
with limestone is fragile. Well water should be tested on
a regular basis, and test results should be kept for future
reference.
It can look and taste just fine, but don't be fooled, harmful invisible substances that you cannot taste, see or smell,
could be lurking in your well water. Chemicals and bacteria can enter well water from the surface and from the
ground. Nearby agricultural activities, underground drilling, excavation or even septic systems, if built or maintained improperly, could lead to increased nitrates and
fertilizers seeping into soil and contaminating your well
water.
