onstration of the SEWIP Lite variant in
September 2013. The accelerated development and deployment was undertaken
in partnership with Cobham, ACI Technologies, the Office of Naval Research
and the Naval Surface Warfare Center's
Crane and Dahlgren divisions, and the
Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
The rationalized and repackaged
SEWIP Lite architecture was developed
inside eight months, with a productionrepresentative "reduced Block 2" system
delivered to USS Freedom (LCS 1) in September 2014 for technical performance
measurement and customer evaluation.
Known as Fast Lima, this system successfully completed at-sea testing on
Freedom in fourth quarter 2014 and first
quarter 2015.
Lockheed Martin was awarded the
Full-Rate Production contract for SEWIP
Block 2 in 2016, which includes production of the SLQ-32(V)6C variant. Initial
SEWIP Lite production systems are being
supplied via the NAVSEA (PEO IWS 2.0)
as Government Furnished Equipment to
the Coast Guard's OPC program. A total
of 25 OPCs are planned to replace aging
medium endurance cutters from Fiscal
Year 2021 onwards.
The ambition remains to retrofit
AN/SLQ-32(V)6C to the LCS fleet in due
course. However, the mechanism by
which the system is introduced into the
LCS program remains the subject of con-

The Sensors Directorate of the Air
Force Research Lab (Wright-Patterson
AFB, OH) has issued a Notice of Contract Action (NOCA) for an effort named
Radio-Frequency Intercept by Photonic-Assisted Threat Identification,
Disaggregation, and Extraction (RIPTIDE). According to the notice, "The
objective of this program is to develop
and demonstrate prototype photonicelectronic systems proving advanced capabilities when compared to the current
state-of-the-art all-electronic solutions.
Work will focus on areas in which hybrid
electronic-photonic solutions provide a
competitive advantage and include: the
capture of signals over an ultra-wide
frequency range with a large instantaneous bandwidth; the realization of
large "effective" bandwidth solutions;
the rapid analysis of wide-frequency
signals; solutions which exploit photonics to realize low-latency capabilities;
the ability to both stare, self-cue, and
analyze/process." Under the program,
prototypes will be developed and tested.
The notice also states, "In an effort to
move the photonics community forward,
an emphasis will be placed on solutions
that will work despite the practical limitations associated with the performance

of the existing non-ideal constituent
photonics components. Solutions should
be fabrication tolerant despite real-world
performance limitations." The point of

The Air Force Strategic Development
Planning & Experimentation Office (SDPE)
intends to host an Industry Day regarding
Directed Energy Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (DE C-UAS) February 5-9 at
Joint Base Andrews, MD, February 5-9. On
Tuesday, February 6, the meeting organizers will provide a breakdown of the Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) campaign
for the next 3 years. This will include
upcoming experiments in air base air defense, precision engagement and aircraft

The Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency (DARPA) was scheduled to hold a Proposers Day for the Millimeter - Wave Digital Arrays (MIDAS)
program on January 26, as this issue of
JED went to press. According to a DARPA program description, "the objective
of the MIDAS program is to explore the
extent to which multi-beam systems
can be employed at millimeter wave
over extremely wide ranges of frequencies, which necessitates digitization
within the array itself ... The primary
goal of the program is to develop and
demonstrate a tile building block subarray (>16 elements) that supports
scaling to large arrays (100's-10,000+)
in the 18-50 GHz band and does not
eliminate spatial degrees of freedom
within the sub-array. It is expected
that this will be enabling hardware
for multifunction, multibeam phased
array applications and emerging massive
multiple-input-multiple-output
(MIMO) techniques in communication
and sensing." The MIDAS program point
