UHF (30-300 MHz/300 MHz-3 GHz) and
L/S-band (1-2 GHz/2-4 GHz) traffic. The
firm says that the TRC-6030 has a high
degree of DF accuracy and can be used
alongside a large number of antennas
for fixed and mobile applications. The
system is believed to be in service with
the French Army.
Germany's Plath (Hamburg), has
a significant footprint in the ground
COMINT domain. The firm's Automatic
COMINT System, better known as ACOS,
can be used for communications intelligence
gathering at the strategic level.
Similarly,
ITALY
Italy's Elettronica (Rome)
is
currently
developing a man-transportable
ground COMINT system. According to
the company, "these products are based
on deployable lightweight systems that
can be linked in a network to achieve
distributed functions, but still also be
autonomous and potentially unattended.
The soldier can then use their HMI
to have a complete picture of aggregated
data from all the connected sensors
and not just from the sensor that they
are carrying."
The company says that it sees a
its NALOS (Narrowband
Location System) performs COMINT for
standard and low-probability-of-intercept
communications in the HF range.
The modular design can be scaled up
to integrate several DF and monitoring
stations, plus additional operators, to
increase the area under surveillance.
Plath is currently involved in the provision
of Germany's Mobile Scalable
Communications
Fa), which will roll out a new vehicular
COMINT platform across
the German
Army. In October 2013, Plath won a
contract to provide three MoGeFa systems
to the force.
In fact, Germany is something of a
center of excellence as far as COMINT
technology is concerned, which is probably
unsurprising given the country's rich
heritage in defense electronics. Defense
communications specialists Rohde and
Schwarz (Munich), has developed a number
of dedicated COMINT products for
land forces. These include strategic-level
systems,
along with vehicle-mounted
packages. At the tactical level, the firm
has several portable systems such as the
PR100 receiver which monitors across
the 9 kHz-7.5 GHz range. This can be
used alongside the company's HE300
Active Directional Antenna covering
20 MHz-7.5 GHz, which also houses a
switchable preamplifier. The company's
DDF007 portable DF product family covers
20 MHz-6 GHz when operating in DF
mode, although this can be extended
downwards to 9 kHz when operating in
receive mode. The product line includes
two products; the ADD107 covering 20
MHz-1.3 GHz and the ADD207 covering
690 MHz-6 GHz.

COMINT systems. "New operational scenarios
are pushing technology towards
distributed architectures for miniaturized
systems," it explains. "Tactical EW
sensors will be increasingly required
to have COMINT-like performance to
achieve,
together with proper
rithms, the localization of
Intelligence (MoGealgoradar
and
communication emitters with high accuracy."
Elettronica has furnished the
German Army with the KWB-RMB modular
ELINT system, which covers the 0.140
GHz range. The system is mounted
onboard a Fuchs
six-wheel drive armored
personnel carrier (APC). It supplements
other COMINT systems which
the German Army has in service, such
as the vehicle-mounted COMINT system
from Airbus Defence and Space (formerly
Cassidian), which is also mounted
onboard a Fuchs APC.
UNITED STATES
In the US, DRS Intelligence, Communications
and Avionics Solutions (ICAS),
(Merrimack, NH), has a wide range of
tactical
COMINT
systems,
including
manportable gear. The 4-channel, Tactical
Manpack COMINT DF system provides
DF over the 30-3,000 MHz frequency
range with a DF accuracy of 5 degrees
RMS and a tuner speed of 500 ┬Ásec. Remote
interfaces are via Ethernet or USB.
The system's collapsible DF antenna fits
into a rucksack and is attached by cables
to a hand-held Tablet PC unit, antenna,
and communications radio. The antenna
can be configured in a closed position
for on-the-march or half-open or open
for enhanced performance. Not including
battery, the system measures 6.36 x
4.0 x 10 inches and weighs 9.5 lbs. It can
be used in either standalone mode or as
part of a larger network of manpack systems.
It can also be networked into the
larger DRS EW system.
Another DRS system is the Soneticom
Product Group's (Melbourne, FL)
Blackstone Body-Worn DF/TDOA system
that supports real-time signal scanning,
monitoring and TDOA-geolocation of
narrowband signals in the 2-3000 MHz
range ("full-specification DF" 100-1000
MHz). The two-channel system has a DF
accuracy of 8 degrees RMS with a tuning
speed of less than 500 ┬Ásec. Chestmounted,
or worn on the forearm, the
system uses
ruggedized
smartphone
technology for configuration and command
and control. Supporting single or
multi-node operations, intercepted signal
data and team member positions are
displayed on a geo-referenced map for
situational awareness. Together with a
telescoping small form factor DF antenna
assembly, the system weighs 13.8 lbs.
Another US SIGINT firm is TCI (Fremont,
CA). Systems from TCI include
fixed-based, vehicle and man-portable
equipment for spectrum monitoring,
DF and geolocation, including hybrid
AOA/TDOA systems. One example is the
model 903S VHF/UHF Man-Portable COMINT
and DF system that weighs less
than 40 kg and is designed for two-man
carry, as well as vehicle-transportable
applications.
The 903S simultaneously DFs all
signals in bands of interest, including
frequency-agile signals, using 3 GHz/sec
fast-stepping wideband receivers combined
with DSP-based fine-frequency
channelization.
