message f rom the pre side nt HELP SHAPE OUR FUTURE T The Journal of Electronic Defense | August 2016 12 his message is a month early, at least as measured by the event I'm asking you all to pay keen attention to - our annual cycle of elections that begins on September 1st. I feel it is important to convey the real need for you to actively engage, to lead by example, and help select the future leaders of this Association. The AOC is regarded as a leading voice for electronic warfare (EW), its principles and profession. At times we can have many views - many voices - because after all, we represent a complex blend of expertise and experiences. Science, engineering, acquisition, operations, testing, logistics, intelligence, training - across governments, industries and academia around the world. From a leadership perspective, EW is certainly not a single organization with a singular leader. So in essence, to advance the EW cause, the EW profession, all that expertise and experience must coalesce and pull in the same direction, and speak with unity of purpose. This gives rise to the notion of a leadership "cooperative" (" takes a village..."). And we have several examples of contributions to this construct - the EW Working Group in Congress; the resonance of the multiple studies that have all pointed to a much-needed focus on EW leadership and for a purposeful longterm strategy; OSD's EW Executive Committee (EXCOM), and the AOC itself. And, certainly a sampling of General Colin Powell's oft-quoted leadership tenets are appropriate here, such as establishing a vision and be demanding in achieving it; communicating openly about problems and opportunities; challenging the status quo and encouraging evolutionary change; taking risk when faced with new challenges (at least try!); and valuing people and sharing great achievements. The AOC is certainly moving in this direction. But what does this mean for you, the individual Association member? I would encourage you to make your voice heard as a valuable, proud member of the EW community. As future leaders, network with your peers across our profession (EW, spectrum management and cyber experts) to share ideas on complex issues. Grab a young EW professional (Crow or not), and mentor them; ...and, if you're a young Crow, go seek out that EW graybeard mentor in your organization! Above all, be proactive and get engaged. So, just as I opened this article, I implore you to take the opportunity that lies before you to help determine the AOC's future - your future - with the upcoming slate of elections on the horizon. Read about the candidates - we have nine excellent candidates for two At-Large Directors, and three top-notch individuals vying for one of our two International Regional Director positions this year. Your vote will indeed make a difference and enable the AOC to achieve its future vision and strategy across the EMS...EW, SIGINT, cyber and IO. - Dave Hime Association of Old Crows 1000 North Payne Street, Suite 200 Alexandria, VA 22314-1652 Phone: (703) 549-1600 Fax: (703) 549-2589 PRESIDENT Dave Hime VICE PRESIDENT Lisa Fruge-Cirilli SECRETARY Glenn "Powder" Carlson TREASURER Joseph Koesters PAST PRESIDENT Kenneth Israel AT-LARGE DIRECTORS Jesse "Judge" Bourque Glenn "Powder" Carlson Todd Caruso Craig Harm Brian Hinkley Amanda Kammier Mark Schallheim Muddy Watters APPOINTED DIRECTORS Anthony Lisuzzo Don Quinn REGIONAL DIRECTORS Central: Joseph Koesters Mid-Atlantic: Jim Pryor Northeastern: Nino Amoroso Mountain-Western: Sam Roberts Pacific: Darin Nielsen Southern: Gene "Joker" McFalls International I: Dr. Robert S.
