Emerging Professionals Program

Future-proofing your
organization's leadership

O

ver the next 10 years, it's estimated that a large percentage of
the Auxiliary Services professionals in top leadership positions
will be retiring. Will today's young professional, just entering
the field, be prepared to take the role? How do we ensure a transfer
of knowledge from one generation to the next?
The Professional Development Committee has paved the road for
those new to Auxiliary Services to gain experience and get ready for
the next step in leadership by creating the Emerging Professionals
program, or EP.
The primary goal for EP is "to provide education and resources to
better prepare emerging professionals for developing and advancing
their careers in auxiliary services," explained Lillian De Lisle, Director
of Professional Development in the NACAS National Office. "This
includes education in the fundamental areas of budgeting, funding
models, contract management, institutional structures, networking,
leadership, student development, and employee management."

The Professional Development Committee worked to identify a "Body
of Knowledge" for those who have fewer than five years of Auxiliary
Services industry experience to use to gain knowledge in key areas.
Using the Body of Knowledge as a syllabus, the Professional
Development Committee has developed numerous opportunities for
Emerging Professionals. Some of the most successful events take place
prior to the annual conference, C3X. For example, in 2015, Success Within
Auxiliary Services: Professional progression through an ever-changing climate and Building Better Auxiliaries by Understanding Student Development,
and in 2016, Remarkable Professionals Share One Heartbeat!
"The Emerging Professionals pre-conference program sets the tone
for the conference by providing broader leadership-focused educational content appropriate for this audience, allowing them to get the
most out of the rest of the conference education," said De Lisle.
"It also provides a distinct value that differs from the rest of the
conference programming; educational sessions often focus on specific
