New partners for new ventures

ike all universities, Georgia College (GC) is constantly faced with pressure
to increase revenue by introducing new business concepts to campus
without additional support funds. As the state's designated public liberal
arts university, GC has a unique mission and capped enrollment, which makes
new ventures even more challenging.
Despite the challenges, the university has recently used a creative partnership to develop an on-campus technology store concept: Innovation Station.
"The city of Milledgeville doesn't have anything like Innovation Station,"
said Kyle Cullars, Assistant Vice President for Auxiliary Services. "We knew
we needed the resources of an on-campus tech store, but it took some time
to develop the right partnerships to make it a reality."
For a school with slightly more than 6,000 students and capped enrollment, it may seem surprising to see a retail store like Innovation Station on
campus. At first glance, it would not appear that the student body could
support a technology store.
The Innovation Station is a complete retailer with 1,300 square feet of the
latest technology including Apple and PC computers, bluetooth speakers,
gaming gear and a multitude of tech accessories.
But the store does more than sell gadgets; it has become a digital sandbox
for students, faculty, and staff.
"It was important that the store support our liberal arts mission," said
Cullars. "We wanted a place where students could try new things and where
faculty could learn about and get comfortable with the latest teaching technologies and tools before incorporating them into the classroom."

To help make the connection to the classroom, Innovation Station features
a demo room, stocked with some of the best technology for video conferencing, training and vendor demonstrations.
"The demo room allows us to host weekly classes to help people get the
most out of their purchase or figure out what will best meet their needs,"
said Innovation Station Assistant Manager Susan Bergeron.
The demo room regularly features industry and vendor experts. This past
semester, a representative from Apple facilitated classes on the newest iPads
and how iTunesU and iBooks can be used in academic settings.
"It's great that we have the ability to host some amazing guest speakers,"
said Bergeron. "The one-on-one training is a way we provide service after
the sale and distinguish ourselves from big-box stores and Internet retailers."
Of course, as an auxiliary unit, Innovation Station has to pull its own financial
weight. Store manager Charles Cruey explained some of the financial challenges.
"For us to be an Authorized Apple Retail Location, we have to meet some
aggressive sales goals. Relying solely on student business won't get us to the
finish line, so the university channels all institutional sales through Innovation
Station. Not only are we able to meet our sales goals, but the university is
able to recognize additional savings through increased Campus Development
Funds from Apple," said Cruey.
Auxiliary Services had found the perfect partner in the university's IT
department.
Before the existence of Innovation Station, the IT department would
purchase computers for either university or student use and receive a small
