College Services - Summer 2017 - 42

This chart displays data from mid-January
to April 1, 2017. The thickness of "chords" indicate the proportion of bike rides to and from
locations.
Besides the matter of convenience, it is evident that personal bicycle usage is less than
pre-Hawk Wheels. Each semester, students
are notified that abandoned bicycles will be
impounded to clear space on bike racks. These
bicycles are eventually donated to a non-profit
501(c)(3) organization. A decline in the number
of impounded bicycles signify a fundamental

change in how the campus views bike ownership. Students are buying into the idea of Hawk
Wheels as a reliable system of transportation.
And while users are freed from the upkeep that
they would normally be subject to with a personal bicycle, Hawk Wheels bikes have needed
limited repairs. As Nick Cannon explained in the
program's ribbon cutting ceremony: "We want
to encourage cycling but we also want to discourage irresponsible bicycle ownership." With
bicycles having a more significant presence on
campus than ever before, education of bicycle
ownership has paid dividends for the campus.
Of the students who continue to keep a personal bicycle, they have more interest in learning
about bicycle maintenance and use provided
bike racks more often. UNCW can be an even
more attractive campus without the eyesores of
stuffed bike racks and bicycles locked to trees.
The growth of alternative transportation can
create more challenges, however. As the university's Auxiliary Services continues to cultivate a
bicycle-friendly university, demand for Hawk
Wheels will undoubtedly create the need to
provide more bicycles. The program's current

presence on campus may also create demand for
stations in various off-campus locations, including nearby shopping locations and Wrightsville
Beach. The idea of convenience may pose a
threat of entitlement by students. Users with
the free membership can use Hawk Wheels for
up to an hour per day, without incurring charges.
However, users can choose to pay $25 per year
to have four hours of free rides per day. New
stations off campus could create a demand for
longer periods of free rides. Since the bike share
program is only three months old, it is early to
foresee exactly what opportunities and threats
will present themselves in the near future. In
the meantime, UNCW's Auxiliary Services will
continue to have an open dialogue with students about Hawk Wheels and seek involvement
from local businesses, in terms of sponsorships
and incentives.
The League of American Bicyclists has recognized UNCW as a "Bicycle Friendly University"
since 2011. UNCW's Auxiliary Services hopes
that Hawk Wheels will help the university earn
a higher standing from this organization in the
near future. And what's not to love about this program? UNCW has positioned itself as a regional
leader for universities interested in implementing
their own bike share. Bikes no longer stifle the
flourishing landscape. Students now have a stake
and unified participation in a campus project.
And, of course, the daily commute is less of a
headache. In my final semester at UNCW, Hawk
Wheels has grounded me and helped to include
myself in the fabric of campus. Being occupied
by finishing capstone courses and interviewing for post-graduation jobs nearly diminished
my involvement with the campus itself. I had
the great opportunity to work with UNCW's
Auxiliary Services to produce a promotional
video for Hawk Wheels. It gives me an immense
sense of pride to be able to highlight what it
means to be a UNCW Seahawk to incoming and
prospective students.
This successful partnership with The Gotcha
Group has demonstrated the importance of
alternative transportation as a means to mitigate
traffic and commute times, as well as promoting
the mission of sustainability. Hawk Wheels has
the potential to be a staple of not only campus,
but also Wilmington as a whole. This program can
be a valuable link to the city's diverse attractions.
Educating and implementing a bike share for a
college market gives UNCW to further its priority
of environmental consciousness. Hawk Wheels
can be used as a medium to create stronger
interest in sustainability practices and help nurture UNCW students into upstanding citizens.
