eginning your college career can be a stressful and scary time in
your life. This was most certainly the case for me. Despite growing
up in Tucson, the University of Arizona was an entirely new world
for me. The University appealed to me in many different ways. When
deciding on a college to attend, students usually focus on successful
academic programs, athletics, diversity, and location. The University
of Arizona offers students another incentive for attending by providing
them with a remarkable auxiliary service, our Bookstore. The first time
I stepped into our Bookstore I felt the rush of students flooding in to
purchase textbooks, school supplies, and gear. I also experienced tours
being given and the stunned looks on each incoming student's face.
Our Bookstore not only provides students with services unlike any
other college, they focus on giving back to the University. From financial
support for clubs, to scholarships, to the Tucson Festival of Books, the
Bookstore provides it all.
Being able to experience the size, variety, and school spirit convinced
me that the Bookstore was the ultimate employer for college students.
I decided to begin my career working for them to become a part of this
great organization. My career started out as a sales associate for the gifts
department, and expanded to becoming a Student Lead. As a Student
Lead I've had the opportunity to expand my knowledge on leadership
techniques, merchandising, and the power of working as a team. This
position has allowed me to recognize my love for leadership and working with students and staff on making the work environment an overall
better place. Without this job and position, I would have never found
my passion for management. Of all the great things the Bookstore has
provided me with, the greatest has been granting me the opportunity
of finding my inner leadership skills. The Bookstore has transformed my
work ethic and pushed me to becoming much more than just a sales
associate. I now realize that guiding and managing people is a passion
of mine that I dream of pursuing later on in life. Without this job I would
have never had that chance. From observing the creation of purchase
orders, to working inventory, to merchandising products in the store, the
Bookstore provides students with a work experience that is like no other.
Working at the University of Arizona Bookstore has also allowed me
to make connections with employers and faculty members and form
strong relationships. They have shown me that they truly care about
their employees in many ways. One way is providing students with the
opportunity to meet powerful people who have the ability to change
your education experience. The Bookstore has provided their employees
with a faculty fellow whose role is to further your academic experience
by providing assistance for a variety of things. Katie Maxwell, our faculty
fellow, has helped me drastically improve my resume, cover letter, and
interview skills. Office hours are provided each week, however if you're
unable to attend she makes herself more than available. Her help was
so beneficial to me that I've been honored to receive a management
