MICHIGAN CONSTRUCTOR * Summer 2015
here is a very popular cable news show that includes a 'tip of the day' at the end of each
program. While not always personally relevant or helpful, the idea is good and makes viewers
stay to hear the tip. I don't have a single tip to give you, but rather a series of them that relate
to the value of AGC. These tips include benefits of membership from both AGC of Michigan and AGC
Meetings. Associations like their meetings! But they advance ideas, support the industry and bring
subject matter experts together to talk shop. AGC's menu of meetings is robust should you choose
to participate. In Michigan, our committees and councils cover education, construction legal matters, marketing and PR, safety, tax and financial and workforce development to name a few. If you
or your colleagues are responsible for these issues, you should be participating. I promise you will
benefit from the experience.
AGC of America has great meetings as well. Programs still to come in 2015 include the AGC IT Forum
(July 30-31 in Chicago), Contractors Environmental Conference (September 2-3 in Arlington, VA),
Construction Leadership Conference (September 17-19 in Pittsburgh) Building Contractors Conference
(October 7-9 in San Diego), and the Construction Financial Management Conference (November 4-6
in Las Vegas). All of these meetings can be found at www.agc.org under the 'Attend an Event' button.
Information. This might be the most underrated part of association membership. The information
you have access to is nearly priceless. Let me give you an example. You need a form of some kind
for HR purposes in your company. Ordinarily you would you have someone create that form from
scratch or pay for something similar from a vendor. But as an AGC member, you have access to the
AGC HR eForum which includes literally thousands of construction HR professionals who can provide
you with sample forms to solve your problem. Post your question to the eForum and in short order
you have what you need.
Education. I separate this from meetings because this is key to any company's success. How well
do your people know their jobs? New skills will never go out of style! AGC has many resources for
you in the area of professional development/education. AGC of Michigan offers education programs
throughout the year on subjects including building information modeling, lean construction, supervisory
training, risk management, scheduling, construction technology and much more. These programs are
highlighted on the AGC MI homepage at www.agcmichigan.org. AGC of America has many education
offerings as well, but their hallmark programs are the Advanced Management Program (November 8-13
in Dallas) and Construction Project Manager Course (December 6-11 in Atlanta). Visit www.agc.org
and click on the 'Attend an Event' button for details.
There is a lot more to your membership that I cannot fit onto just one page. Dozens of annual networking opportunities. More than 15,000 of your peers attend AGC events annually! Safety training
available from our 'relatively' new safety director and long-time MIOSHA employee Paul Wrzesinski.
No other association has Paul or his background and knowledge. Affinity programs that can save
you thousands of dollars a year on vehicles, fuel, shipping, software, office supplies and much more.
Unmatched advocacy in Lansing and Washington. More than 124,000 letters were sent by AGC
members through the AGC Legislative Action Center last year. So those are my tips. I hope you take
advantage of them! ◗
