that we are positioned well to answer that challenge. So the obvious question is what does
AGC do for its members, and more importantly,
what can AGC do for me?
On the safety front, AGC's safety director Paul
Wrzesinksi trains hundreds of AGC employees
each year as part of the grant we receive from
MIOSHA. Paul is recognized as the industry leader
in his construction safety knowledge, having
worked for MIOSHA's enforcement division for
many years. Paul has saved many AGC members
time and money with assistance on incidents and
citations-a direct return on dues investment!

MESSAGE
FROM THE CH A IRM A N
What's In a Name?

We will continue to do
what we do best with
better focus and an eye
toward meeting future
industry challenges.

By now I think most AGC members in Michigan
know that we have gone through a rebranding
process to better reflect the value of your association and the reality of today's construction
industry in Michigan. In the 100 years that AGC
has been around (in Michigan and in Washington)
much has changed in society and our industry.
Amoco, General Foods, Bethlehem Steel, Pan
Am, EF Hutton, Woolworths-the list of iconic
American companies that are no longer in business is amazing. In their heyday, no one would
have conceived of them going out of business.
But times change, as do consumers, the marketplace and society in general. What made a
company succeed in 1950 has little to do with
succeeding today.

On Labor Relations, AGC again leads the industry.
Scott Fisher has a proven track record as a fair and
very successful negotiator, and maintains excellent relationships with our friends in the building
trades. In fact, even on contracts that AGC bargains collectively with other associations, it is
Scott who takes the lead in bargaining sessions
and makes sure that the employers have a fair
outcome-our members and THEIR members!
On the education front, AGC is the ONLY association that provides credentialed programs on building information modeling and lean construction.
The AGC of Michigan will continue to offer these
types of high value training opportunities that
enhance the knowledge of your key personnel.
On the legislative front, I would remind everyone
of the new Michigan Business Tax instituted a few
years back and AGC's successful effort to have a
subcontract exemption included in how the tax
was calculated. Absent that exemption, construction companies in Michigan (members and nonmembers alike) would have paid tens of thousands
of dollars more annually in business taxes.

That makes the AGC story even more compelling.
AGC has not stayed static, but rather embraced
change and listened to its membership. That was
part of our rebranding philosophy: find out what
the industry thinks (internal and external to AGC)
and make sure we're relevant.

We will continue to do what we do best with
better focus and an eye toward meeting future
industry challenges. We will do a better job of
promoting our industry and our members. AGC
and Michigan's construction industry have a long
successful relationship; here's to another 100
years of success!

Our members and non-members for that matter
have a high level of respect for AGC. But they also
recognize a dramatically changing industry and
need for AGC to be able to respond. I am confident
