WORKPLACE SAFETY and Health Programs Evolving in Manitoba School Divisions By Leonard Zdrill, Safety and Health Officer River East Transcona School Division (RETSD) I came to RETSD to the new position of Safety and Health Officer in the summer of 2009. I came from a similar role in the manufacturing sector, ready to take on the challenge of implementing a safety program in an organization with 2400 plus workers spread out over 49 worksites. What follows are some of the successes and challenges, and a glimpse into what the future may hold in the evolution of workplace safety programs across all school divisions. Success: Establishing a written safety program Working for quality management system companies (lean, theory of constraints, ISO programs, other), documenting what you do and how you do it and then actually doing what you document and doing it the way you say you do it is standard. This philosophy was carried forward when I chose to establish a written safety program for the school division as a first priority. Establishing a written safety and health framework was a key to moving forward with communicating, training, implementing and continually improving the program. 24 * Read this issue online at
