continued from page 29 systems that will be able to offset significant portions of the demand load for the building. From the risk perspective, there are challenges and risks ahead with respect to how the local marketplace, (meaning both the Province through the Green Building Policy, and local architectural and engineering consultants) will respond to new changes in the LEED Reference Guide. Beginning in October 2016, the LEED Reference Guide will be significantly amended, for the fourth time in 15 years, to Version 4. This document incorporates significant changes from the current version, called LEED 2009. As we have experienced with the current school projects, the local consultant marketplace will need time to absorb and understand the changes in the rating system, which may have an impact on the success of projects being able to meet a LEED certification target. Given the scale of the changes in the Reference Guide, this effect is likely to be more acute with LEED Version 4. Despite the fact that the Green Building Policy currently recognizes the LEED Reference Guide as a standard third-party metric for comparative evaluation of the sustainability of a project, it remains to be seen how the Policy will accommodate a third-party rating system that will be changing for the third time during the design/construction lifespan of some of PSFB's larger projects. Finally, from a more positive perspective, we have found that there is significant growing interest from School Divisions for developing stronger curriculum links between building design and construction, and the students. With the recent new school projects, PSFB has been working with the Divisions to enumerate the sustainable and high performance features of the new buildings, and connect these features, through an illustrated written document, to learning outcomes in both the humanities and the sciences across multiple grade levels. The written text document is then given to the school at the end of the project, so that teachers and students can refer to the legacy of the sustainable construction process and project from the point at which the school opens, to long into the future. Thus, the lesson opportunities devolving from the construction and design process are not forgotten when the first generation of teachers and students move on to future stages in their lives and careers. The obvious benefit of all these initiatives is that the sustainability lessons inherent in the construction of new schools will be pervasive and integral in the lives of students for years to come. As such, we continue to look forward to each new school project as an opportunity to apply the experience gained on prior projects. ■ FPS CONSULTA NTS GERALD LEVIN, B.
