But when Wolfe attempted to pursue racing as a full-time
career, her dreams came to a screeching halt. "A crew chief
said that he felt uncomfortable hiring me because it 'would
make the crew's wives jealous,'" she explains. "It was then that
I realized I would not have the same opportunities as a male
counterpart in that field."
Undeterred, Wolfe shifted her focus and landed a spot in
Ford Motor Company's College Graduate leadership development program. There, she was introduced to business,
manufacturing, engineering, product marketing, and a diverse
range of functions and career options. "I was also given the
fantastic opportunity to work at Land Rover overseas as an
off-road test engineer. Ford opened my eyes to a world of
opportunity," she notes.
After several years in the automotive field, including a
stint in district sales at BMW North America, Wolfe spent
nine years at Danaher Corporation, a diversified industrial
science and technology company. There she took on a series of
roles, progressing from operations manager to vice president
and general manager, before joining Acco as president and
CEO in July 2017.
"By aggressively taking charge of my own career, I was
able to navigate male-dominated fields and excel through
performance and results," she says. "Having said that, I have
also experienced others trying to 'talk over me' and gender
disparity through unequal pay. Notably, I was told once after
I 'leaned in' and asked for a promotion for a job I was already
doing that I should 'just put my head down and let my results
speak for themselves.'"
Although Wolfe used those incidents as motivation, she
notes that such feedback can negatively impact young women,
or prevent them from taking charge of their careers. "It's that
much harder when there are no female role models in reach,"
she admits.
Bolstered by the support of multiple mentors through the
years, ("mostly men, and I am grateful that they genuinely
cared for me and my progression," Wolfe adds), when Acco
offered her the opportunity to lead the company, she jumped
at the chance.
