Crumbly points out that automation is one way of adapting to "some
of the ongoing struggles" of the past
two decades. "It's not a complete solution, but it's one way to bridge the gap
of employment shortages," he said. "In
addition, organizations are looking to
improve processes; they're using the new
technologies or applications to improve
or speed up the process."
Numerous institutions are creating
innovation centers based inside schools,

often in partnership with industry,
where students can have a chance to
tackle real-world problems in the classroom, he noted. For instance, Auburn
University in Alabama has an RFID lab
dedicated to research into the business
case and technical implementation of
RFID and other emerging technologies, specifically as they apply to the
retail, supply chain and manufacturing
sectors.
"There are plenty of organizations
that are asking for institutions like
Harvard to provide skill sets like data
analytics and understanding data processes so they can fill upcoming job
positions," Crumbly said.
Institutions like Tuskegee University
can also help close the employment gap
in a different way. "There's not a lot of
diversity in the material handling space
or the logistics space," Crumbly said.
"You need more people there, and that
includes diverse populations; there's a
desire for diverse populations to enter
the market. If you look at your traditional decision-making population,
there's a huge gap there."
As someone who is well versed in
the materials handling sector and who
works within an academic institution,
Crumbly is uniquely positioned to be
able to open the minds of students from
diverse backgrounds to the possibility
of entering the industry upon graduation. "My job is a heavy task, because
a lot of students, when they think of

supply chain management, they think
of a person doing a very dirty job or
driving a truck, but there are also a lot
of business process positions," he said.
"You have to transition minds."
At Tuskegee University, faculty
work directly with corporate partners
that have interest in recruiting diverse
populations. "It is a slow process, but
if you get that five or ten students in a
year, then other students will say 'There
are opportunities for me in this space,"
Crumbly said.
"My passion is twofold: I'm very
happy and passionate about these
emerging innovations, but I'm also
very passionate about introducing these
career opportunities to young millennials who are entering the market."
