teleportation machine operator didn't
get the scanning right. When scanning
improves, that will help drive 3D printing advancements."
The Deloitte analysts also expect that
3D printing will have more of an impact
on any company or industry focused on
service parts, Boykin says.
"When something within a supply
chain is broken and needs to be fixed,
typically there can be a very slow
response," he says. "Some parts are very
obscure and don't have high movement
and are therefore very costly to carry
those parts in inventory. In the future,
we can expect companies to archive
scanning specs for some replacement
parts, and start to use those in lieu of
carrying millions of investment capital in inventory to have them available
across the globe when needed."
The report detailed how several companies have embraced the potential of
3D printing and have expanded their
use of the technology:
*	 A	 global	 aerospace	 and	 defense	
company deployed electronic beam
melting, a 3D printing technology,
and reduced production costs for
aerospace components by 50 percent
while still maintaining functionality
and performance.
*	 An	automotive	manufacturer	used	
additive manufacturing to make the

hand tools used in testing and assembly. These custom-designed hand
tools are more ergonomic and are 72
percent lighter than traditional hand
tools. The tools helped save 58 percent
in overall costs and reduce project
development time by 92 percent.
*	 A	multinational	technology	company	
leveraged laser-sintering technology to create 80 specialized hearing
aids in only four hours. This technology reduced inventory by allowing the company to store patient
data digitally.
The Deloitte analysts recommended
that companies study up on 3D printing and additive manufacturing and be
prepared to use these technologies to
enhance their supply chains when the
opportunity arises.
"3D printing is still very much in the
honeymoon stage, and there is much
that is still misunderstood in terms of
expectations, cost, utility and speed,"
the authors wrote.
They also recommended that companies now use pilot programs to help
build internal capabilities and external
alliances and position themselves to
capitalize on opportunities that arise
as technology advances begin to support
broader applications.
"For many manufacturers, prototyping is a practical application that
can provide value in the short-term
while they are evaluating longer-term
opportunities," they wrote. "This can be

especially true for businesses in which
speed to market is important and products go through multiple iterations during development."
Mary Hamilton, managing director, digital experiences R&D lead at
Accenture Labs in San Jose, says that
3D printing is moving beyond prototyping and basic products manufacturing.
"New key players in the space are
emerging to drive better quality, faster
printing technology and higher-design
standards," Hamilton says. "Advances
have led to machine-driven generative
design concepts, where humans can provide parameters and instructions and
the system can define a set of optimized
design options."
According to the "2016 Accenture
Technology Vision," as this technology
has advanced with the help of intelligent
automation software-ranging from surface-level automation to artificial intelligence-the ability for people to do more
with technology has resulted, she says.
"People can now utilize technology
such as 3D printing as the essential coworker for the digital age," Hamilton
says. "Additionally, 3D printing is moving into the use of more difficult materials including higher-end plastics, metals
and organics, and expanded business
cases include replacing spare parts
inventory with on-demand parts. This
will have the business benefit of reducing holding costs and increasing ease of
access for rapid repairs."
For companies that are just considering adopting 3D printing within
their supply chains, she recommends
that they develop prototypes to minimize potential risks of the "disruptive
solution." The consultant firm helps
guide them through that process with
its Accenture Supply Chain Center
of Excellence.
"This is accomplished by prototyping in an environment of lean start-up
innovation that helps each organization
to quickly and effectively test and learn,
mitigating the risks associated when
working with an evolving ecosystem
of partners," Hamilton says.
Accenture recently worked with
BarcelonaTech on a joint research project aimed at studying the advantages of
