ultra-postponement with 3D printing using the analytical tools
of operational research, she says. In this project, a new twostage stochastic programming decision model was developed
to assess the convenience of the introduction of 3D printing in
any generic manufacturing process, both single and multiproduct, and the optimal degree of postponement, the so called
"customer order decoupling point," assuming uncertainty of
demand in multiple markets.
To this end, the organizations proposed the formulation of a
generic supply chain through an oriented graph that represents
all the alternative technologies that can be deployed, defined
through a set of operations for the manufacturing, assembly
and distribution steps, each one characterized by a lead time
and cost parameters. Based on this graph, they developed a
mixed integer two-stage stochastic program that finds the
optimal manufacturing technology to meet the demand of each
market, the optimal production quantity for each operation
and the optimal Customer Order Decoupling Point (CODP)
for each technology.
"Essentially we can assist companies in defining critical
points for ultra-postponement and opportunities to maximize
profits through alternative techniques like additive manufacturing across markets," Hamilton says.
Michael Gravier, an associate professor of marketing and
global supply chain management at Bryant University in
Smithfield, RI, says that 3D printing is wrapped up with a lot
of other "sea change" trends such as demand economy, physical
Internet, Industrial Internet of Things and the advent of robots
in the supply chain.
"The technology itself is fascinating, yet the implications for
all this technology are only just beginning to be understood,"
Gravier says. "3D printing is a game changer for manufacturing
but its real impact on supply chains will take years to play out."
In a world where 3D printers can make most any product
relatively quickly, and largely automated systems can have it
delivered quickly, customers will focus on determining their
exact need, he says. Searching for suppliers will shift from,
"What's available?" and "What's my supplier capable of?" to
"I can have it my way. So what do I want?"
"Competitive advantage will accrue to those who master the
information on how to help customers decide what best helps
them to serve themselves or their customers, and does this
with the best possible service experience," Gravier says. "The
upshot: many 3PLs, warehouses, and other logistics providers
are ideally situated close to customers and specialize in service."
Smart companies will install their own 3D printers and
replace the traditional manufacturer-based supply chain with
a short, responsive and service-oriented supply chain, he says.
The most important action that companies can take to prepare
for 3D printing's impending revolution is simple: make digital
transformation a priority.
"Put someone in charge of information and social media,
and get company leadership on the same page," Gravier says.
"Most importantly, make the digital transformation a strategic
priority for the company. Now's the right time to prepare-before
someone else gets to know your customers better than you." ●
