their engineering workforce or about
how they can tackle preventive maintenance services.
One of Accenture's clients, tire
manufacturer Michelin, began using
sensors to understand how their tires
were performing, with the goal of using
the data collected to build better tires.
"Then they realized that there is an
opportunity here to completely change
the relationship that they have with
their large fleet customers; they could

actually take on the job of monitoring
those tires, deciding when the tires need
to be replaced or rotated, Salama says.
"All of a sudden, they're not selling tires
to their customers anymore, they are
providing a tire as a service, and they
can charge their customers per mile
driven." Customers may respond favorably to this approach because it moves
tires from a capital expenditure to an
operating expenditure.
Hyundai, which manufactures cargo
ships, previously had little interaction
with customers after a sale. "Hyundai

was interested in how they could drive
more services and more revenues from
those customers, rather than having to
keep selling more ships," Salama says.
Hyundai's connected cargo ships now
extract data from 4,000 to 5,000 sensors.
The data gets uploaded through a satellite and delivered through an IoT platform. "We run analytics over top of that,
and that's made available to Hyundai, so
they can see exactly how their engine or
a particular part is operating in each of
the ships they've put it into. But they can
also make that information available to
their customers, the ship's operators."
In the future, Salama says, the ship's
sensors could communicate via the IoT
with a port that has its own sensors. That
communication could let ship operators
know whether they should slow down
because the port is full, or speed up
because there is a slot that they could
deliver to. Logistics companies could
become part of this scenario, accessing
sensor data so they know exactly what's
on the ship they're coming to unload
and so that the ship in port knows
