inside those siloed systems," he says. "That's why it's important
that the cloud platform is maturing at this time. The cloud
enables you to break open those siloes and get all the data in
one place as opposed to having it locked up in hundreds of
different systems that are not connected and don't talk well
to each other."
While companies may have valid concerns about the security of sensor-gathered data in the cloud, Felgendreher says
they can manage access to that data carefully, dictating who
goes into that cloud and under what circumstances they can
see that information. That's safer than having that information
sitting on a hard drive in China, on a USB stick in Bangladesh,
or on a fax that's lying out on a desk somewhere in Thailand,
he adds.

Business cases and experimentation
As companies begin to understand the potential for sensor
technology in the IoT, they might be tempted to dive in head
first. Baker says they shouldn't be asking the question "What
can we do with sensors?" but "What is the business problem
that we are trying to address?" Once companies have identified that problem, then they can think about the technologies,
including sensors, that could be used to address the problem
and the experiments that they should run to prove that those

technologies will work in that situation.
"It could also be a matter of whether a company should use

sensor A or sensor B. Sensor A might give more information,
but sensor B gives us enough information and it's a little bit
cheaper. The judgement is not 'Can it be sensed?' but 'How800110_Clear.indd 1

much sensing do I need to do?' It's easy to overelaborate these
things," Baker added.
HIGH SPEED DYNAMIC
"Thinking through a strategy and thinking through the

businesses cases that will create value for your business with
the IoT is pretty fundamental," Salama agreed. "I think the

danger is in embarking on a pilot or experimentation that is
purely a technological activity. There are many companies
that like to experiment and go down that path, and they will
end up with lots of pilots that go nowhere because it's not clear
what they're doing it for in the first place."
That doesn't mean companies should sit on the sidelines and
wait to see how sensor technology evolves. "Companies should
have a bias for action," says Felgendreher. The good thing about
using the cloud in combination with sensor technology and
the IoT is that you don't need to discard your old systems and

start new. You can take small steps and walk before you run.

Sensor technology will continue to evolve, says Courtin.
"It's absolutely going to keep growing, and there are still a lot
