"In the manufacturing, inventory control
and logistics, those sensors allow a very
granular view of the entire process. you
can track in real time where your products
are, how many there are, how fast they
are, how many are in your inventory. All
of those connected devices, there's a vast
amount of data with anything connected
into IoT."

the entire process. You can track in real
time where your products are, how many
there are, how fast they are, how many
are in your inventory. All of those connected devices, there's a vast amount of
data with anything connected into IoT."
Data is also available via robots common in many warehouses. Banducci said
robots "have been able to push significant amounts of data, how they're moving and what they're moving. They can
track their motions and throughput quite
easily. The Internet of Things is enabling
a much more granular look at where all
the materials are in the production and
warehousing cycle and allowing manufacturers to optimize their processes."
That comes a time when devices overall are becoming "perhaps a little less
fragile...that seems to be a minor trend,"
Stewart said.
Banducci points out the smaller size
of consumer electronics, which requires
"a higher level of accuracy when assembling those devices. Robots are particularly well suited at high-accuracy
positioning, much more than a person.
That has helped deliver products at a
higher quality because they are so precise
and so repeatable."
He cites the use of robots in assembly
of mobile phones, which create devices
where the buttons don't rattle and have
uniform spacing. "There has to be some
piece of automation with those."
Where it's headed
In the U.S., today's technology may be
nearing a saturation point. According to

the Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA), 95% of Americans own a TV.
Portable computers are owned by three
out of four Americans. And more than
two-thirds of Americans own a digital
camera, desktop computer and highdefinition TV.
Given that the CEA's research shows
that "to keep me entertained" is the top
reason Americans purchase electronics,
the industry may continue in a flux until
the next entertainment breakthrough.
Stewart points out that some of the
newest technology hasn't taken off.
"Consumer 3D printer sales are falling, and the world's second biggest 3D
printing company exited the consumer
business on December 27, 2015. Not a
positive sign," he said.
Could VR be the thing that gets consumers to invest in tech again? Maybe,
but not for a while. Stewart warns it may
be 2020 before VR really becomes a big
deal. "At this time, there is nothing on
the horizon that looks like it will be able
to cause the industry to return to those
growth levels, or even offset declines
in some maturing technologies like
computers and tablets. Let alone smartphones...if sales of those ever decline it
will cause fairly dramatic decreases in
annual device shipments."
The strategic market research firm
Euromonitor International echoed
Stewart's sentiments in a December
2015 report. "As consumer electronics
continues to move toward streaming
media and the use of all-in-one devices
such as smartphones and tablets, many

mature product categories such as DVD
players, monitors and portable media
players are expected to continue to
see substantial contraction in volume
sales. These declines are expected to
be moderated by growing categories
such as wearable electronics and may
even see reversal as additional products
are released throughout the forecast
period."
And that will no doubt create
increased price pressures as volumes
fall, Banducci said. Manufacturers
are "looking to shave costs at every
facet of the process." He sees mobile
robots as an answer in warehousing
and logistics.
Other consumer technology
trends-like 3D printing-may take
off in the supply chain before they are
widely adopted in the home. Stewart
sees an increase in enterprise use of 3D
printers, "almost entirely for rapid prototyping and the production of intermediate parts, like tools, dies, jigs, molds
and casts. Very few final parts are being
made that way, so we still need the material handling business to move parts
from central manufacturing points
to where they are needed. It is almost
always faster and cheaper to make a part
the traditional way and ship it, rather
than use the distributed manufacturing
model enabled by 3D printers."
It may be somewhat ironic that
the adoption of some of the next generation of consumer electronics could
trace their roots to the warehouses that
housed their predecessors.
