advises that companies "relax." Really.
"At this point, I would say the vast
majority of these technologies are no
longer disruptive innovations," he says.
"Instead, I consider them to be the core
components of an infrastructure that
enables a digital supply chain. They're
going to bring incremental improvement, which gives organizations the
opportunity to develop a proof of

concept over time to prepare itself for
a more radical approach."
Predictive analytics key
to closing the value loop
All eight technologies are explored
by the report in deep dive format with
illustrative case examples and key takeaways for leaders to implement today.

most of the other solutions support, utilize, generate, capture, store or access
information-but don't translate it into
actionable directives.
"If all you do is hoard information
and generate more and more data, but
don't do anything with it, then what's
the value?" Bradley asks. "The most
compelling business case of all is predictive analytics as the central component for many of these solutions. It is the
means to glean insights from the data
that are actionable and deliver value."
Caterpillar's Farwell agrees, saying
that the top four technologies noted have
become what he calls "democratized."
"They're available now, even to small
and medium sized businesses, and you
don't have to be an expert to program and
implement them," he says. "But, if a company just implements technology and
expects great things to happen, they're
going to be disappointed. You have to
apply predictive analytics to the data
coming from the automation, sensors
and other technologies to provide comprehensive solutions to your customers-
otherwise the investment is worthless."
Farwell urges organizations to
expend the effort to go beyond just
understanding what their customers
need; he urges building of empathy-
and not at the upper management level,
but rather at the front line. "Before you
apply one of these technologies, you've
got to think about those back office
operations, the outputs, everything that
people need to have to run their businesses," he adds.
Take robotics and automation, for
example. During the panel discussion, Farwell shared how Caterpillar is
selectively experimenting with robots
that work alongside people, doing work
he calls the "3Ds: dirty, dangerous, or
demoralizing." By strategically deploying solutions to help the people who are
actually doing the work, "that's where
technology meets practicality, and
where it can really help solve those big
business problems."
