spending on these eight technologies for
the next two years, 52% plan to spend in
excess of $1 million (an increase from
last year's reported 49%); 12% plan to
spend more than $10 million; and 3%
have set aside more than $100 million.
APX Labs' Kim anticipates that a
chunk of that will be spent on the human
workforce, specifically on "technology,
such as wearables, that helps bridge the
operational intelligence gap between
the digital warehouse and the analog
workforce. Those solutions act as human
interfaces that deliver actionable information derived from the tremendous
amount of data that's being generated
by this new digital infrastructure, creating an environment where people are
working with, not against, machines,"
he explains.
Although computers, laptops, tablets
and mobile phones are becoming pervasive throughout the supply chain, Kim
points out that they still require workers
to interrupt their workflow in order to
access the information.
"From the perspective of greater efficiency, smart glasses and smart watches
enable instant delivery of task critical
information right as the person is doing
the work," he notes.
Further, Kim adds that these investments in technology will bring companies tremendous value in ways that do
not impact the human workforce. "The
technology being introduced into the
workplace is not necessarily a threat to
human labor," he explains, "as much
as it's potentially an opportunity for
people to be doing higher value work
that presumably correlates to higher
paying positions."
That said, implementing better
inventory management and network
optimization practices can be done with
very little capital investment, observes
Georgia Tech's Brown. "Companies tend
to overlook the costs of inventory-the
more you have, the higher the holding costs, the greater the potential for
damage and obsolescence, and the more
space you need," he says.
In Brown's opinion, most companies
take a simplistic view of their inventory
needs, maintaining a three-week supply for all products, for example. "But

every product has different demand
patterns, and with computers, textbook algorithms and the wealth of data
already out there, it's pretty easy to manage inventory at a more finite level," he
explains. "That allows companies to set
specific targets for each stock keeping
unit (SKU)."
As organizations do so, Brown continues, they're tailoring their inventory
levels and reducing costs-and subsequently addressing customer demand
for faster response times and lower

delivered costs. "Instead of investing
millions of dollars in warehousing
equipment and new facilities, if you've
fine-tuned your inventory management
techniques, you might not even need the
warehouse," he notes.
Workforce challenges
continue to be top of mind
As previously noted, the supply
chain talent gap continues to be a huge
challenge for those surveyed, with 58%
saying they face a significant challenge
