designation for achieving high sales
numbers. The reason behind his success? Castaneda personally commits
himself to each project, noting that the
failure of a multi-million dollar project
could not only be disastrous to himself
and his company, but that much more
so for his customer and their business.
"Their job is on the line, as is their operation's future growth. I take my role in
that very seriously."
So seriously in fact, that-when in
the midst of spec'ing a project-he
often finds himself falling asleep at
night counting rack beams, waking up
counting rack beams, and in between
dreaming vividly about the different
calculations involved.
"What's most rewarding is when it
works both on paper and in reality, and
all that algebra and calculus I studied
in college pays off," he says. "Last year,
I had to figure out how to get a 12-foot
swing-reach, $120,000 forklift to fit
down a 70-inch aisle to lift a 2,000pound pallet 25 feet up, and make sure
it wouldn't go through the roof at 30 feet.
Seeing all your hard work come to fruition, and work the way it was planned
is the most rewarding part."
Although he has a two-year college
degree, Castaneda is quick to point out
that supply chain remains one of the few
fields where opportunities abound for
persons with fewer years of education.
"There are a lot of high paying positions
in the industry that people worked their
way into," he observes. "They started as
a forklift operator, and may or may not
have a college degree, but their employers recognize the value of what they
bring to the table-and it's a lot more
than just education. Having experience
is truly valuable in this industry."
Sharing that message is one approach
the industry should be taking to attract
more young people, particularly at the
high school level, he continues, noting that it seems everyone he's met in
the industry was either born into or
stumbled into it.
"Supply chain is the industry that
touches everybody around the world,
but nobody knows about it. I haven't
met a kid yet who says, 'when I grow up
I want to be a distribution manager,'"

he chuckles. "I feel I stumbled into
this industry, but being here now, it's
something that I want my children to
be a part of. There's a lot of money to
be made and, for a person who likes to
solve problems, there's no shortage of
opportunities."
Humbled, honored and grateful to
represent the industry as the 2016 MHI
Face of the Supply Chain, Castaneda
says it's the time he spent picking fruit
in his early youth that established the
foundation for his success today.

"I learned early in life, while picking
cherries and apples in the orchards,
that the successful people-the ones
who made the most money harvesting
fruit-were the ones who didn't stop
until the job was done," he recalls, adding that he's never done anything "special," other than get up early, stay up late
and work really hard in between, even
if that sometimes means working from
6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a Saturday counting
rack beams (and dreaming about them
while asleep).
