"It's the same in the supply chain
industry as it was in the orchards: the
successful people are the hardest workers," he concludes. "You don't have to
be a lawyer to make six figures. And in
supply chain, you don't just have to be in
sales to make that kind of money either.
The opportunities are incredible."

Clint king: Full speed into the
family business
In 1997, when Clint King was a year
old, his father started Warehouse Design
Inc. to build storage systems within distribution centers. Just six years later,
King knew precisely what he wanted
to do when he grew up-and it wasn't a
job in supply chain. Instead, he started
working toward a career as a professional race car driver, first racing entrylevel Bandolero cars, then working up to
the Automobile Racing Club of America
(ARCA) racing series.
"I grew up around the supply chain
industry, but I really wasn't interested
in it until I got older and could work in
it," he confesses.
Unfortunately, notes King, motorsports racing requires deep pockets, and
he soon found himself in need of cash.
To finance his passion, King went to
work for dad. Initially, he installed rack,
mezzanine and shelving in Warehouse
Design customers' facilities. However,
being naturally mechanically inclined,
he soon found himself drawn to, well,
the drawing side of the business.
"As I got into it, I quickly got interested in the design and planning
side," he recalls. "Laying out the facilities, the logistics, the planning, the

construction-that's what attracted me
to the industry-how technical it really
is. There's much more to it than just steel
in a building with pallets on it."
Fascinated, King learned how to use
AutoCAD to develop the layouts, design
plans, and create permit drawings. "From
there I became really interested in what
else the supply chain field might have to
offer. It's a lot deeper and more vast than
I could have imagined."
He was also surprised to discover the
many parallels between the supply chain
and motorsports industries, beyond just
getting the right things to the right place
at the right time.
"In motorsports, it's equally important
to have the right people and enough people for support on site; it's the same when
we install systems," he says. "If I have the
chance to go back into motorsports, I'd
change a lot of things based on my experience in supply chain-including the way I
manage scheduling, personnel, even how
the race shop would be laid out."
Career-wise, King says the most
rewarding part of his job is knowing
that his company's work makes a huge
difference for businesses and their customers. "We are an important link in
the supply chain. Companies receive
product because of what we do; product
couldn't reach the end user otherwise," he
explains. "The multi-million and multibillion dollar companies we work with
wouldn't be that way without what we do."
Now, as a 20-year-old warehouse manager, King's biggest project is tackling the
lack of qualified supply chain workers
in the industry. For Warehouse Design
specifically, that means attracting people
to the opportunities within the distribution center design and construction field.
"Often, the most challenging things
I face in my career are time and personnel management," he says. "Being that
I represent the exact demographic that
we're trying to attract to the industry in
general-and to our business in particular-it made sense for me to step forward
and try to be that spokesperson for the
supply chain to local students."
Leveraging both King's motorsports
background and his strong interest in
the supply chain field, the company shot
a video to raise awareness of the industry.
