n 2015, MHI's Career & Technical Education (CTE) program
received several calls from school districts on both coasts
seeking more information about how to establish their own
supply chain, material handling and logistics education
programs at the high school level.

Those calls led directly
to our participation in two
different Supply Chain
Education and Workforce Summits-
in Bakersfield, CA in April, and in
the Hudson Valley of New York in
November-as well as the addition of a
similar event to the already planned MHI
Career and Technical Education (CTE)
Educators' Summit, held in Patterson,
CA last July. Further, we're currently
assisting the Greenville, SC region as it
works to establish its own educational
and workforce programming.
What exactly is a Supply Chain
Education and Workforce Summit, you
may ask? It's an opportunity to bring
together the key players within a region
to discuss the workforce needs of local
industry, and how those might be met
by educators and supported by government. Specifically, when a school district
contacts MHI to ask how to start a supply chain education program, we always
encourage them to first stage such an
event, and invite local business leaders

and regional workforce development
agencies to meet and exchange ideas.
That's because, in our experience,
the most successful supply chain-related
career and technical education programs
are the ones built first and foremost on a
foundation of strong partnerships with
local industry.
Philip Alfano, Superintendent of the
Patterson Joint Unified School District,
emphatically agrees. Alfano-whose
school district hosted the Educators'
Summit and a Workforce Summit last
July-hosted a similar gathering back in
2009 at the outset of its business logistics
technical training program. The program
was developed with guidance from MHI,
as well as via connections Alfano made
with local businesses, workforce development leaders and community colleges.
"We first established a strong, highly
involved business advisory committee,"
Alfano explains, noting that seven years
later he still routinely interfaces with
representatives from companies with
local and regional distribution centers,

including Amazon, Grainger, CVS,
Kohls, Restoration Hardware, Costco,
Gallo, Sierra Pacific, Tesla and more.
"What's key in this is having their input
about the skillsets they need as employers, as well as their willingness to work
with us to create job opportunities for
our students."
Amazon, for example, guarantees up
to 10 positions for the school's students
upon completion of the program. "If they
stay with Amazon for a year, Amazon
will then pay their tuition-up to 95%-
to continue their education. Grainger
and Gallo have also developed similar
programs," he says. "Both Amazon and
Restoration Hardware have hired many
of our program graduates."
The involvement of those companies
was also crucial in garnering support
for, planning and equipping Patterson
Joint United's new 10,000-squarefoot training facility (which includes
a 6,000-square-foot working warehouse and adjoining classrooms). Paid
for by a $2.5 million bond fund and
a $500,000 grant from the California
Career Pathways Trust, the new building
opened this past January. It dramatically
expanded the 400-square-foot space
from which students had been maintaining inventory and filling customer
orders for nonprofit book distributor
First Book.
