school and summer employment programs. "We wanted to get
them thinking about new ways to introduce the supply chain to
young people," she says. "MHI helped us explain supply chain
by asking people to consider how your shoes got on your feet,
for example."
Although establishing a formal pathway for education and
workforce in the Hudson Valley region is still in its infancy, Kautz
is excited about the connections that were made at the Summit.
"By reaching out to people who were not traditionally part of the
conversation, we've been able to raise awareness," she explains.
"People are reaching out for more information to understand the
industry and the training opportunities, and the training providers
themselves have been talking-particularly about the best practices
that MHI shared from the other programs around the country."
Additionally, Kautz is working with local industry to foster
stronger connections to her organization's youth program, hoping to set up site tours. She's also created a packet of information
about the industry and its opportunities that she's been sharing
with local high schools.
"MHI helped us to better understand the kinds of jobs a student
can have out of high school with a certificate, with an associate's
degree, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and so on," she adds.
"Being able to share that progression and put it into context of education, wages and job titles really helps us, as a Workforce Investment
Board, more easily explain the opportunities to young people."
Also in the early planning stages of developing a supply chain
education and training program in collaboration with the Greenville
County School District is Jay Blankenship, Regional Workforce
Advisor with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce.
"Given our location on the I-85 corridor between Charlotte and
Atlanta, there are a lot of products moved through this region," he
explains. "Further, there's been a huge influx of distribution and
transportation companies, for which there is going to be a great
need for a large number of employees."
While researching similar programs at the end of 2015,
Blankenship discovered MHI. He quickly set up a meeting with
several local employers, workforce providers, the school district
and MHI to brainstorm different resources that could potentially be leveraged to help. Representatives from the Applied
Technology Center in Rock Hill, SC worked with representatives
of the Greenville County School District to arrange a tour of their
logistics and distribution program.
"After our meeting in Rock Hill, the partners in Greenville
worked to begin the process of identifying potential partners for
the school district's program," continues Blankenship. "The team
visited the Walgreens' Distribution Center in Anderson, SC and
Grove Medical, to name a few."
Currently, Blankenship is working on building a regional supply
chain industry advisory panel to facilitate several targeted talent
pipelines, including the educational program's development. He's
also planning an expo to be held in the fall that showcases local
employers and targets young people to help raise their awareness
of the industry and its opportunities.
"We view the partnership with MHI as a value-add that allows
us to be able to leverage resources where we can meet this capital
need in terms of talent," he concludes.
