ECONOMIC MARkET ANAlySIS
corporate lending standards could constrict access to credit
beyond commodity companies to include other industries-
including material handling.
Global monetary policy and currency fluctuations
The global situation is also precarious. Global growth
was at 3.1 percent in 2015-the slowest pace since the Great
Recession. Despite slow growth in 2015, we expect an even
slower pace of growth in 2016, especially after the IMF
lowered its global growth forecasts and issued warnings
about downside risks to global economic growth back in
April 2016.
We expect most foreign central banks will remain highly
accommodative throughout most of 2016, and we expect that
the Fed is likely to respond with accommodation when the
U.S. economy slows further. This could greatly affect foreign
exchange rates, since the Fed could turn dovish as the U.S.
economy weakens, which would weigh on the greenback in
the second half of 2016, and in 2017.
Commodity prices and material handling
Although slow global growth has weighed on commodity
prices, demand for some commodities has risen because of
the low price environment. Plus, future supplies are likely to
fall due to restricted access to credit in the space. Given these
concurrent prospects of both rising demand and falling supplies, commodity prices are likely to rise on trend.
Material handling companies should be aware of upside
risks in the near- and medium-term.
Until prices move higher, however, low prices could benefit
the bottom line of metal-intensive material handling companies, including crane, conveyor, lift and rack manufacturers.
Implications for material handling
Despite a record level of material handling new orders in
2015, new material handling orders are likely to fall in 2016
and 2017. After all, material handling is a largely pro-cyclical
industry, which means that material handling growth moves
with economic growth, although often in a more exaggerated
way. In other words, a slowdown in manufacturing and the
overall U.S. economy is likely to have a disproportionally
larger impact on material handling.
Critical data to watch
The most important economic data to watch with forward-looking implications for material handling are the
ISM Manufacturing Index and the MHI Business Activity
Index (BAI)-especially the BAI New Orders series. The
ISM Manufacturing Index and the MHI BAI are released
at the beginning of each month, and figures above 50
imply expansion, while figures below 50 imply contraction.
Multiple consecutive monthly readings below 50 for the ISM
Manufacturing Index is usually a leading indicator of an
overall U.S. recession. With extremely high levels of risk and
uncertainty, it is more important than ever to watch leading
economic, manufacturing and material handling data. ‚óŹ
