Not being truly omnichannel hinders
companies to the degree to which they
can truly meet consumers' demands for
a particular style or size, he says.
"In the case of an apparel retailer,
they might have one sitting in a store,
but not in the warehouse," Rentschler
says. "But if they're not engaged in
omnichannel fulfillment, they may
disappoint the customer because they
wouldn't know that the store has that
particular garment."
For retailers with large store networks, the store itself is the hyper-local
warehouse, enabling them to better
achieve the omnichannel fulfillment

model, he says. Even stores like Macy's
that are rapidly closing locations have
the advantage of having networks of
retail locations from which they can
fulfill eCommerce orders.
"As consumers have shifted from

"Consumers are now used to this
frictionless buying experience because
Amazon is so good at it, and now the
rest of the retail industry has to match
the frictionless buying experience," he
says. "I think that's why we're starting
to see companies investing more and
more in becoming true omnichannel
fulfillment operations."
