Where Are They Now?
Catching up with MHEFI scholarship recipients
Alex vu Brown
Texas A&M
University
Alex Vu Brown
helps ensure that
people get where
they're going, which
is fitting because his career is definitely
going places. Since last June, Brown has
worked as an operations and logistics
manager for Uber, the fast-growing company that has become a major threat to
taxicab companies in urban areas all over
the world.
Brown said he was the tenth person
hired to work out of Uber's Houston
office, which is charged with growing
the business in the Texas markets of
Houston, College Station, Beaumont
and Corpus Christi. His job is to make
sure it's always easy for customers to get
a ride, so he manages Uber's local team
of drivers and travels to on-boarding
events to help new drivers get started.
He said the hours can be long, but his
job is rewarding because he can see his
efforts paying off.
"What I really enjoy about it is it's
a fast-paced environment," Brown
said. "It's very much like working at a
startup. Even though Uber is in a lot of
cities around the world and seems like a
large company, it's pretty small on a city
level, and we have been able to grow the
Houston business pretty substantially in
just the last 10 months."
Brown, a 25-year-old native of Fort
Worth, Texas, graduated from Texas
A&M University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in industrial distribution.
For his senior year, he received a scholarship from the Material Handling
Education Foundation Inc. (MHEFI),
an independent charitable organization
dedicated to supporting the study of
material handling, logistics and supply
chain, exposing students to the many
opportunities in the industry. The foundation has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships and grants since its
inception in 1976.

For Brown, the scholarship came at
just the right time. Midway through
college, he changed his major from
biology and decided that he no longer
wanted to go to medical school. The
sharp turn in his career path required
a dedication to study.
"The MHEFI scholarship was really
awesome for me because it kept me
afloat in my final year of college and
allowed me to focus on my studies in
the industrial distribution major and
think about what my career choices
were down the road, so that really
helped out," he said.
Prior to joining Uber, Brown spent
a year as a business technology analyst
for Deloitte, helping a large tech company in Texas upgrade its enterprise
resource planning system. Before his
final year in college, he had a summer
internship with Proctor & Gamble,
where he visited several factories to
help the company optimize its production of Bounty paper towel products.
He also worked in customer support for
Apple in 2012, answering customers'
technical and operational questions
over the phone.
In his spare time, Brown enjoys
playing guitar and traveling. He said
he tries to take one big trip each year
and plans to visit Poland and Hungary
later in 2016.
Wells Jarvis
East Carolina
University
If you're a new
parent, you should
try to get on Wells
Jarvis's good side
because he's got what you need. Since
August 2014, Jarvis has worked as a
supply chain analyst in Greenville,
NC for Domtar Personal Care, which
produces a wide range of products
such as disposable baby diapers and
training pants under the brand names
Fisher-Price, Fitti and SleepWell. The
company also manufactures adult

incontinence products such as bed pads
and diapers.
Jarvis's job involves managing
the company's supply of raw materials for production.
"I'm kind of a liaison between different departments and kind of control how
much comes in and what goes out," he
said. "I get to work with every department
in the company, whether it be finance,
supply chain or production. It's actually
a lot of fun because you get to see a lot of
facets of the business. It's a great way to
get a view of how a company works. If
you have finger in everything, it kind of
broadens your horizons and prepares you
for the future even more."
Jarvis, a 27-year-old native of Little
Washington, NC, is a 2013 graduate
of East Carolina University, where he
majored in industrial distribution and
logistics, with a concentration in supply
chain and a minor in business management. He said he's considering returning
to school to earn his master's degree in
global logistics and supply chain management and hopes to eventually move
into management at Domtar. While
an undergraduate, Jarvis received an
MHEFI scholarship.
"It most definitely was a huge benefit,
and it's always great to know that your
hard work pays off," he said.
Prior to joining Domtar, Jarvis spent
a year as a territory support manager for
Southeast Industrial Equipment, a salesbased role for a major supplier of equipment such as forklifts and floor sweepers.
While still a student in 2013, he attended
the annual convention of the Material
Handling Equipment Distributors
Association (MHEDA) in Palm Desert,
CA. Seeing hundreds of companies represented at the conference, Jarvis said he
knew he had chosen the right career path,
one that was rich in opportunity.
"It was very eye-opening," he said.
Jarvis, who has been married for
almost two years, is an avid outdoorsman
who enjoys hunting, fishing and going to
the beach.
