#industry news JAVITS CENTER DEBUTS A NEW LOOK, FEEL FOR NYC MEETINGS BY MARGARET VICTOR W ith new leadership, new infrastructure investments and a new focus on customer service, the Javits Center looks, feels and operates better than ever. Our top-tobottom renovation just came to a close last year, and as a result, this New York icon is hosting more spectacular events than at any other point in its history. Considered the busiest convention center in the United States, the modernized structure has become an inspiring combination of glass and steel, attracting more than two million visitors and 35,000 exhibiting companies a year to Manhattan's West Side. As part of the five-year, $460 million renovation, new façade, flooring, mechanical and telecommunications systems have been constructed, along a new column-free, 110,000 square foot exhibition hall known as Javits North. A 7-acre green roof - the second largest of its kind in the country - also has been built, making it the crown jewel of the building's new sustainability program that has reduced energy consumption by 26%. All of these improvements come as the West Side neighborhood undergoes a massive transformation with the construction of new skyscrapers, bringing thousands of new residences and businesses along the Hudson River. With the unprecedented development of Hudson Yards, the Javits Center is now in the heart of New York's next great neighborhood. It is only steps away from the High Line, Hudson River Park and 22 @MPIGNY SPRING 2015 the upcoming opening of the 7 Subway extension on West 34th Street. This new subway station across from the Javits Center will connect the building to all parts of New York City like never before. Visitors will be able to attend an event, then catch a New York Mets game on the other side of the City - for the cost of a subway ride. Since the completion of the renovation project, some of the country's largest trade shows have experienced significant increases in attendance, creating a buzz throughout the events industry. With ticket sales rising, exhibitors and attendees are certainly enjoying the recent improvements, such as new food courts, new seating areas and a state-of-the-art WiFi system that serves up to 70,000 users at one time. For example, International Conference of Shopping Centers' Annual New York National Deal Making Conference set a new attendance record in December 2014 with a reported 26% increase compared to the prior year's event at a different venue. In January, National Retail Federation's Annual Convention and Expo saw a 15 percent increase in reported attendance with 35,000 visitors, another record in the event's 104-year history. All of this is great news for the Javits Center and great news for New York. With 840,000 square feet of flexible exhibition space stretched across six city blocks, this facility hosts a wide range of events, from trade shows such as the North American International Toy Fair and Summer Fancy Food Show to public shows such as the New York International Auto Show and New York Comic Con to special events like the global film premiere of "X Men: Days of Future Past." Our events fuel New York's economic engines, supporting more than 14,000 jobs and generating up to $1.5 billion in economic activity a year. New York has always been a state of opportunity, and the Javits Center embodies that entrepreneurial spirit - today more than ever.   @
