#feature INCENTIVIZE ME: THE ROAD TO INCENTIVE TRIP RECOVERY BY MICHELLE MARIE ADAMS Y ou're the top producer at your company, so where are you going to go this year? Probably nowhere, you think to yourself, just like last year and the year before that. In past years, this has been a reality for many top producers working for wellknown and well-respected companies and corporations. The deterioration of the annual incentive trip has been on a steady decline starting with the big hit in 2008, when the U.S. started to feel the cold grip of the recession and companies were forced to take a second look as where the money was going. When budgets 8 @MPIGNY SPRING 2015 were reduced and profit was down, the people holding the purse strings needed to start making cuts and adjustments. Unfortunately for the meeting and incentive industry, we were among the first to feel that overwhelming impact. Companies forced to reevaluate their incentive packages and qualification processes now face the potential of losing some great sales talent and experiencing lower moral. The decline of inventive trips was not brought about by poor performance of sales teams - they were still out there selling their hearts out. Rather, there simply was (and is some cases still is) not enough cash flow coming in to justify the large spend on rewarding those efforts. Aiding in the incentive trip decay was the fact that certain industries and companies were (and still are) under heightened scrutiny of being accused of carelessly spending their money. The words "luxury" and "resort" have become the new six-letter no-no. Reward, motivation and incentive are all buzz words that have true meaning and significance for the corporate sales teams of the world. A good salary and outstanding commission structure is a motivator all on its own, but what about the unwritten rewards, the perks and benefits of doing a kick-butt job?
