Motor Coach Canada: Tour & Travel Canada 2019 - 32

Regions
PEI is divided into five touring regions:

* Green Gables Shore: Millions of readers
from around the world have come to know
and love Anne of Green Gables, and Prince
Edward Island is home to many sites that pay
tribute to the red-haired heroine and her creator,
Lucy Maud Montgomery. While Anne may be
the principal attraction for many, the region is
a spectacular piece of Prince Edward Island's
acclaimed scenic landscape composed of red
sandstone cliffs, white sand beaches and rolling
farm fields. Some of the classic coastline has
been protected in the Prince Edward Island
National Park, which hugs the central north
shore. Enter the park through Cavendish Grove,
which boasts walking trails, picnic grounds and
stand of sugar maples. Golfers have a hard decision to make since Green Gables Shore has
more than 11 courses, as well as amusement
parks, mini golf, water slides, a local drive-in
theatre and restaurants. Down the road in North
Rustico, adventure seekers can choose from
kayaking, canoeing or deep-sea fishing. Or, take
a dance lesson inside a completely refurbished
pig barn in Wheatley River owned by former
amateur champions or experience the Indian
River Festival Fine Music Series at St. Mary's
Church, the largest wooden church on PEI.
* Red Sands Shore: Named for its red sand
beaches, jutting cliffs and clay roads, this area is
home to the Confederation Bridge, the longest
bridge in the world crossing ice-covered water.
The 13-kilometre trip takes only 10 minutes but
if you'd like more time to appreciate the graceful
bridge structure itself, head over to St. Peter's
Roman Catholic Church in North Chelton.
Back at the foot of the Bridge, take some
time to visit the shops and cafés at Gateway
Village. Heading east along the Trans-Canada
Highway, you will soon come to Victoria-by-theSea, a historic fishing village revitalized by the
galleries, studios, a theatre, restaurants and,
perhaps most tempting, a chocolate factory.
Red Sands Shore is easy to enjoy at any time
of year: U-Picks offers visitors the chance to
pluck apples right from the branch and the
Brookvale Provincial Ski Park has hills for sledding, downhill skiing and snow-tubing and a
network of trails for cross-country skiing and
exploring. By May, the air is warm enough for
a canoe or kayak paddle along the West River
in St. Catherines. You'll enjoy the scenery as
you glide along in the shadows of the rolling
Bonshaw Hills.
* Charlottetown Region: This capital city is
where the Fathers of Confederation met at
Province House in 1864 to plot out the creation of Canada. "The Fathers and Ladies of
Confederation" offer guided tours, or visitors
can get caught up on Canadian history at
Founders' Hall down the National Historic Street

32

called Great George. Steps away from Province
House is Victoria Row, a narrow street closed
to car traffic in summer with charming red brick
buildings that house an eclectic array of shops
and restaurants. The Confederation Centre
of the Arts occupies the other side of Victoria
Row. It's here that Anne of Green Gables-The
Musical has been delighting audiences for
nearly 50 incredible years. The Confederation
Centre won the 2008 Air Canada Business
of the Year Award from the Tourism Industry
Association of Canada. A boat cruise onto the
waters of Hillsborough Bay allows you to marvel
at the copper spires of St. Dunstan's Basilica.
Every Wednesday and Saturday, the country
comes to the city at the farmer's market, where
traditional island fare such as fresh vegetables,
meats and pies can be found alongside ethnic
cuisine from the four corners of the world. At
night, Celtic bands, local singers and summer festivals offer endless entertainment. The
18-hole Fox Meadow Golf and Country Club
is just seven minutes away in Stratford. Keep
driving a little further and you'll discover the red
sands of Tea Hill Beach.
* Points East Coastal Drive: The beaches in the
east are among the best on the Island; the spectacular dune system at Greenwich, PEI National
Park is a must-do for this region and Basin Head
in known for its "Singing Sands." Bike, hike or
snowmobile from one community to another
via the Confederation Trail, a scenic route that
runs right through the village of St. Peters - also
a good stopping point for shopping, dining,
theatre and music.
The Elmira Railway Museum at the far eastern tip of the trail tells the story of the railway
and has a mini-train woods tour. Experience
fine dining at the Inn at Bay Fortune, a bowl of
homemade chowder and one of their famous
milkshakes at Brehaut's Restaurant in Murray
Harbour, or superb waterside locations at Cape
Light Restaurant in Cardigan and Clam Diggers
Restaurant in Georgetown. Go for a sail, take a
seal-watching cruise or play a round or two at
one of the world-class golf courses located in
this region. Evening is the perfect time to find
a ceilidh, a spirited celebration of Celtic music
that's sure to get your toes tapping. Orwell
Corner and Monticello both host these events
on a weekly basis in the summer.
* North Cape Coastal Drive: At the island's
northwestern tip, towering turbines turn the
abundant wind into energy at one of Canada's
leading wind-test institutes. A visit to the interpretive centre will tell you all about the institute's
cutting-edge research into renewable energy.
Here you can also see the Northumberland
Strait on the Island's western side collide with
the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the east at high
tide, or observe sun-bathing seals at low tide.
The nearby town of Tignish hosts an annual
Irish Moss Festival and in Miminegash you
can even eat seaweed pie, a delicious dessert
despite its less-than-tempting name. Bustling
fishing harbours are scattered throughout this
part of the Island and because lobster fishing
employs so many people here, it's not hard
to find a place selling fresh crustaceans for
your dinner table. In O'Leary, a giant potato
looms proudly beside the Prince Edward
Island Potato Museum where you can get a
lesson in the ABCs of PEI's favourite tuber.
Summerside is the island's second-largest city
and has the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, the
home of Anne & Gilbert, the popular musical
sequel to Anne of Green Gables, as well as
a lively boardwalk where College of Piping
performers show off the island's Celtic roots
with energetic displays of dancing, piping
and drumming. In the Région Évangéline, you

can be fed and entertained at a dinner theatre, explore the Acadian Museum or tour the
impressive churches that are still the heart of
these small communities. Overlooking beautiful Malpeque Bay is the community of Lennox
Island, a place to discover the heritage and
traditions of the island's first inhabitants, the
Mi'kmaq, and check out the gift shop with its
wide selection of handcrafts made by local and
international First Nations Peoples.
