s e NAIFA Tak NOLA Feature | Highlights from the 2015 NAIFA Career Conference and Annual Meeting By Christine Cusatis NAIFA members from across the country headed to the Big Easy on Oct. 3-5, 2015, to discuss emerging industry trends and issues during the NAIFA 2015 Career Conference and Annual Meeting. The Crescent City-much like NAIFA-boasts a rich history and culture, and served as the perfect backdrop for members to enjoy a variety of networking opportunities, educational sessions, celebrations, recognitions, an expo hall and more. The festivities kicked off at a pre-conference reception on Friday, Oct. 2, as Todd W. Johnson accepted NAIFA's most prestigious honor in association management: the C. Carney Smith Award. "I am very pleased to congratulate Todd Johnson as NAIFA's 2015 C. Carney Smith Award recipient," said NAIFA President Juli McNeely, LUTCF, CFP, CLU. "NAIFA-Minnesota and the local associations he directs have thrived under his leadership, thanks largely to his passion, dedication and innovative thinking." Johnson, who has served as the executive director for NAIFAMinnesota, NAIFA-Minneapolis and NAIFA St. Paul since 2000, became the 40th recipient of the award, created to honor C. Carney Smith, CLU, who served as the National Association's Executive Vice President for 15 years, ending in 1978. The award promotes the advancement of professionalism in association management. Shaping the future On Saturday, Oct. 3, presenters Mike Smith and Bob Quinlan ushered in the day with a session on Advisor 2020. The workshop helped NAIFA members understand Advisor 2020's findings to anticipate-and even influence-the financial forces that will shape the future (visit the NAIFA Bookstore at to purchase Advisor 2020 today). During the General Session, former professional football player and current actor/playwright Bo Eason inspired attendees with his personal story. In four years, he went from being the worst player on the UC-Davis football team to the first safety drafted in the 1984 NFL draft. He coached attendees on how to convert their own personal stories into personal professional success. Reflecting the spirit of New Orleans, attendees were escorted from the General Session on Saturday, Oct. 3, by parade. 36 ADVISOR TODAY | November/December 2015 Prior to Eason, Julian Good of NAIFA-New Orleans opened the General Session. A 33-year NAIFA member, Good said that the conference provides a "tremendous opportunity to learn and grow," and advised members "to make new friends and build your NAIFA network." In his welcome remarks, NAIFA President-Elect Jules Gaudreau, ChFC, CIC, reflected on the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. "New Orleans took the courage to reclaim its place as one of America's great cities," he said. He then encouraged NAIFA members to aspire to such greatness by being true to themselves. Awards and recognitions Also on Saturday, NAIFA President Juli McNeely recognized NAIFA's past presidents and presided over presentations of the Jack E. Bobo Awards, C. Carney Smith Award and the Membership Awards. Jennifer Alford, vice president of Creative Financial Partners, was awarded the 2015 Young Advisors Team Leader of the Year. Secretary Candidate Keith Gillies and the five Trustee Candidates also delivered their remarks with the common theme of members uniting together as "One NAIFA." On Sunday, Oct. 4, Peter C.
