highways, byways,

generating raw materials for future
asphalt pavements. In fact, during
the 2015 construction season, more
than 78 million tons of reclaimed

asphalt pavement (RAP) was
collected for use in future roads.
The National Asphalt Pavement
Association (NAPA), under a
cooperative agreement with the
Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA), has surveyed industry
use of recycled materials and
warm-mix asphalt annually since

the 2009 construction season.
In that time, the industry has
seen a greater than 32 percent
increase in the use of RAP despite
only a 1.8 percent increase in
total asphalt mixture tonnage.
"Asphalt pavements are already
recycled at a greater rate than any
other material," said Dan Gallagher,
2017 NAPA Chairman and Vice
President of Gallagher Asphalt Corp.
of Thornton, Ill., "but we are not
content with that. We continue to
seek out, and put to use, practices
and technologies that deliver highperforming roads, both in terms
of drivability and sustainability."
More than 74 million tons
of RAP and 1.9 million tons of
recycled asphalt shingles (RAS)
were used in new asphalt pavement
mixes in the United States during
2015, according to the report. An
additional 7 million tons of RAP
