Creating a Sustainability Program: Selecting Goals to Measure Deployment Data collection is a foundation of all sustainability programs By Heather Dylla, PhD., and Martha K. Silver T he first two articles in the "Create a Sustainability Program" series set the stage for founding a successful sustainability program by busting myths that are often barriers to getting started and by identifying factors successful sustainability programs have in common. Values-based leadership and its role in defining your organization's corporate values were discussed, and how these values would be the compass for your program. Existing sustainable operations were identified and were categorized by which of the three pillars of sustainability they touch. With all of this accomplished, it is now possible to jump start a sustainability program with existing operations and incrementally add to the program based on your company's business plan, technological advances, and stakeholder needs. This third article in the series explores how to deploy sustainable operations. This isn't a how-to on the specifics of deploying a particular sustainable activity; that's up Sustainability programs do not occur in a vacuum; they affect the company as a whole, and the company as a whole must be committed to the program. 16 * View past issues online at www.naylornetwork.com/nap-nxt to each organization and its engineering team. Instead, this article identifies steps that organizations should take as they deploy their sustainable operations so that they may fully implement and leverage their sustainability programs. Build a Team of Stakeholders As you prepare to deploy new sustainable operations, remember that a sustainability program should reflect your corporate values1 and consider their effects on your stakeholders. One group of stakeholders in particular that should be included in the deployment process is your employees. For each new sustainable operation deployment project, create a team. In addition to a team leader and whatever talent is assigned to the team to bring the new operation to fruition, include employees that represent departments that are affected by the new operation. These team members do not need to attend every deployment meeting; however, their participation is necessary to ensure overall employee buy-in and efficiency. Sustainability programs do not occur in a vacuum; they affect the company as a whole, and the company as a whole must be committed to the program. There should also be a team member who is assigned the responsibility for communicating http://www.naylornetwork.com/nap-nxt
