Making operating decisions that are good for the
environment and business

industry has a long
history of innovations
that are not only good
business, but also
good for the environment and the
community. Whether recycling
materials, developing technology
to reduce energy consumption
and waste, or addressing water
management and odors, asphalt
mix contractors have been working
to ensure that their business
operations are ecologically
advantageous.
NAPA's Ecological Awards
recognize asphalt production
facilities that best demonstrate safe
and responsible environmental
practices. Facilities are judged on
their design layout, clean operation,
maintenance performance,
practices, and community activities.
Winners must first earn a Diamond
Achievement Accommodation
by establishing adherence to
best practices for asphalt plant
operations, including outstanding
appearance, environmental
practices, safety, permitting
and regulatory compliance, and
community relations.
This year there are two winners
- a new plant and an existing
plant - and a finalist with an
existing plant. Each demonstrates
their commitment to the
environment, employing ecological
best practices that are both good
for the environment and display an
excellence in plant site operations.

Saving energy is a high priority for
Pike Industries Inc., an Oldcastle
Materials Co. As a corporate goal
that has sustainable benefits, saving
energy becomes a vital factor in
many aspects of the company's
decision-making process
Two years ago, Pike Industries
built a new asphalt plant at its quarry
in Hooksett, N.H. The Merrimack
County location off Interstate 93 was
chosen for its strategic significance.
It is equidistant from the state's
two biggest cities, Concord and
Manchester. The plant's location
not only saves on trucking fuel and
related costs to work zones, it also
ensures that the plant can provide
asphalt mix that travels a relatively
short distance to most jobs.
To ensure significant energy
savings, Pike Industries chose
premium high-efficiency motors,
which are designed to significantly
save energy compared to
conventional motors.
"By using premium highefficiency motors, our energy
savings are 50 percent over what it
would take to operate conventional
motors," Jonathan Oakes, Pike
Industries' Vice President of Asphalt,
said. "We save about 35 cents per ton
of asphalt mix."
Pike Industries also saves energy
by using a warm-mix foaming

technology to aid compaction
and improve the coating on
aggregate. The reduced temperature
requirements for warm-mix asphalt
over traditional asphalt save
energy, increase pavement quality,
and provide a low-emission work
environment for employees.
In addition to warm-mix asphalt
technologies, Pike Industries uses
approximately 20 percent reclaimed
asphalt pavement (RAP), as well as
recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), in
its mixes. Using the RAP minimizes
waste, and to minimize energy spent
drying the RAP, the company keeps
its RAP and RAS piles covered.
The Hooksett plant has a 400 tonper-hour counterflow drum that can
divert dry aggregate to a 5-ton batch
plant to make specialty mixes. To
further save energy, Pike Industries
schedules twice yearly tune-ups for
its burners.
