Along with saving energy,
dust control and wastewater
management are an important part
of the company's operations. "The
plant yard is swept and vacuumed
weekly, and a water truck sprays
continuously to control fugitive
dust," Oakes said. There is a
designated wash down area where
water is contained and wastewater
from the plant yard drains into a
setting pond. The closed system
returns the water to the plant.
Controlling fugitive dust and
wastewater not only benefits the
environment, it helps make Pike
Industries a good neighbor. To
further its efforts as a good neighbor,
the company supports the local
community through donations,
employee participation in community
events, and Pike Industries matches
funds employees deduct from their
paychecks to the United Way.

The Lane Construction Corp.
West Columbia, S.C.
Lane Construction's 9-year-old
West Columbia facility operates to
meet the company's environmental
philosophy to not only protect, but
also enhance the environment. Its
commitment to this philosophy
can be seen in how it operates its
plant and how it participates within
the community.
The facility consists of a
drum mix asphalt plant and a
maintenance area. The plant has a
capacity of 500 tons per hour with
three 200-ton storage silos and a
Quality Control lab. Operations are
year-round.
"Our facility is located on the site
of an old mining pit and is prone to
erosion," Lane Construction Corp.
Plant Manager Lee Barrack said.

"We control the erosion by grassing
embankments, adding landscaping,
and using swales to limit damage
and control the water."
Swales are used to direct water
across the site. Water passes
through a series of check dams
to slow its velocity before it is
channeled into slope drains, which
funnel the water into a large
settling pond. The pond slopes are
grassed, and riprap was added last
spring to increase stabilization. The
holding pond allows solids time
to settle before water leaves the
site. These efforts have helped to
minimize on-site erosion and keep
turbidity levels low.
Wash water is managed and
recycled. There is an equipment
wash onsite with a closed-loop
system containing an oil-water
separator. Microbes are used in the
system to assist in the breakdown
of petroleum products. After the
water is separated from the oil, the
water is recycled and reused in the
equipment wash. The separated oil
is stored in a tank, which is emptied
by a recycling company.
In addition to water, Lane
recycles asphalt pavement (RAP);
it's incorporated into all of the
mixes. Stockpiles of fine, coarse, and
RAP aggregates are stored onsite to
supply the plant. The piles are kept
neat using a loader.
Sprinklers are used at the facility for
dust control, and trucks are required
to tarp all loads and reduce their
speed while onsite.
To prevent leaks into the
environment, Lane replaced two
horizontal 30,000- gallon asphalt
cement tanks with vertical tanks.
This reorganization of space
allowed for Lane to better use the
containment area space around the
tanks in the event of a leak.
Other parts of the facility have
also been renovated to conserve
energy. Ductwork between the drum
and baghouse has been replaced to
reduce heat loss. Also, plant layout
