Industry News APA Announces New National director The Asphalt Pavement Alliance announced the appointment of Amy Miller, P.E., as its new national director. She was introduced at the annual summer meeting of the State Asphalt Pavement Associations in Williamsburg, Va. Miller, a professional engineer and general contractor licensed in Florida, has an extensive background in pavement design and pavement type selection issues. As national director of the APA, she will be responsible for coordinating and leading education and field deployment efforts for the asphalt pavement industry, working in close cooperation with the Asphalt Institute, NAPA, and the 40 SAPAs. Miller earned her bachelor's in environmental engineering and a master of business administration from the University of Florida. She is a past president of the Florida Structural Engineers Association, and has experience working as a consulting engineer, for a building materials supplier, and with a construction materials trade association. Peak Performance Asphalt: It's Not Just for Roads Nearly 300 attendees traveled to Denver for NAPA's 2015 Midyear Meeting, July 13-15, where they participated in educational sessions, committee meetings, and networking events in the Mile High City. On Monday, Keynote Clyde Fessler, the marketing guru who rebuilt the Harley-Davidson brand in the 1980s, shared his story of how creatively communicating a company's strengths is the strongest brand strategy. Fessler was followed by recognition of the 2014 Operational Excellence Award winners for marketing, community outreach, safety and ecological operations. Tuesday's panel "Pavement Performance - True Durability With Asphalt" featured members of NAPA's Pavement Performance Task Group and their recommendations for how the asphalt pavement industry's focus on basics and best practices can ensure high-performing, long-lasting pavements. A lively Q&A session followed the panel presentations. In addition to educational sessions and committee meetings, two optional events were offered: the Young Leaders hosted an The American Sports Builders Association, which represents builders, designers, and materials suppliers for athletic facilities, has released new guidelines for asphalt pavements for athletic facilities, including tennis courts, running tracks, basketball courts, etc. The guidelines are intended to assist owners, contractors, design professionals, and asphalt mix producers in the design and installation of asphalt concrete to meet exacting sports construction standards. Information covered in the guide includes mix-design requirements, testing, surface preparation, asphalt placement, and compaction standards.
