NCAT Announces
Four New Researchers

Two Factsheets Focus on UHI

Two new assistant research
professors and two postdoctoral
researchers have joined the National
Center for Asphalt Technology in
Auburn, Ala. Auburn alumni Dr.
Adriana Vargas-Nordcbeck and Dr.
Fabricio Leiva-Villacorta are the
new assistant research professors.
Vargas-Nordcbeck will lead NCAT's
pavement preservation experiments
and pursue new projects related
to pavement management and
pavement preservation, while
Leiva-Villacorta will lead research
on using recycled materials in
asphalt pavements and multiscale
pavement analysis. Dr. Fan Gu and
Dr. Fan Yin are the new postdoctoral
researchers. Gu will lead research
regarding rolling resistance, cold
central plant recycling (CCPR),
and cold in-place recycling (CIR),
while Yin will work on the NCAT
and MnROAD cracking group
experiments. For more information
about each of the new researchers
and how to contact them, visit

Urban heat island
effect (UHI) is the
phenomena where
built-up areas tend
to hold more heat
than surrounding
rural areas. UHI is a
complicated problem
related to buildings
and hardscapes, the
loss of vegetation, and
how water is absorbed
or redirected in an area.
Mitigation of UHI is
complex and difficult,
and some green ratings
systems offer credits for
reflective pavements as a
UHI mitigation tool despite
a lack of science supporting
this approach. There is even
evidence that reflective pavements, in some cases, can have unintended
negative consequences in terms of heat loading of buildings and
human health. Through the Go to Market effort, NAPA has developed
two factsheets on the science of UHI and reflective pavements, built
around the arguments that were successful in having the reflective
pavement credit removed from the Green Globes and Greenroads
green construction systems. One is geared towards more technical
audiences [http://goaspha.lt/2cNyul6], such as code officials or LEEDaccredited professionals, and a less technical one [http://goaspha.
lt/2cZSjIX] for lawmakers and others. If you have questions about
UHI and pavement reflectivity, contact NAPA Director of Sustainable
Engineering Dr. Heather Dylla at
HDylla@AsphaltPavement.org.

New FHWA Guide for Pavement
Type Decision Makers
The FHWA Sustainable Pavement
Program recently published the
"Pavement Life Cycle Assessment
Framework," which is designed
to guide pavement type decisionmakers in conducting life cycle
assessments for pavement systems.
FHWA identifies the framework as
the "first step in the implementation
and adoption of LCA principles in
the pavement community within
the U.S." To access of copy of the
framework, visit
http://goaspha.lt/2cqXnaF.
Following the release of the
framework, the next step for the
Sustainable Pavements Program is
the development of a roadmap to
further advance pavement LCA.

Registration Open for NCAT 2017 Training Courses
The National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) at Auburn
University has announced dates for six training courses next
year. These courses are designed for the asphalt pavement
industry and include "Advanced Mix Design," "Balanced
Mix Design," "Superpave Mix Design," "SMA/OGFC Mix
Design & Construction," "Asphalt Technology," and "Binder
Technician Training & Certification." Training is conducted at
NCAT's research facility in Auburn, Ala. For course details and
registration, visit www.ncat.us/education/training.
