Creating a Sustainability Program

Values
As discussed in the May/June 2016
issue of Asphalt Pavement1 to achieve
success, a company's leadership
must be committed to the program
and support the efforts underway.
The creation of a company's
corporate values is dictated, at least
in part, by company leadership and
its beliefs.
Has anything or anyone
changed? Has new leadership taken
the helm? Has there been a shift
and/or addition to the values your
company holds? At any point in
time during the past year were your
company's values questioned? If
so, before proceeding with a new
program year, repeat the exercise to
identify corporate values. Identify
the values, which stakeholders have
an interest in those values, and any
existing sustainability operations
that align with these values.

Stakeholders
Take a look at your inventory of
stakeholders. Your employees,
customers, community, vendors,
potential employees, and others
share your company's values and
have an interest in the results of
your sustainable operations.
	 As a company, you've
communicated a sustainability
report to your stakeholders to
share the progress of your efforts
and engage the stakeholders in
discussion. It has been a year or

Creating a Sustainability Program is a
five-part series of articles that provides a
basic outline of best practices companies
should follow when planning and deploying
a sustainability program.

longer since you first inventoried
your stakeholders. What kind of
feedback have you heard from your
stakeholders? What has changed?
*
Employees: Are your employees
offering suggestions on how to
improve different sustainability
projects? Are they sharing
concerns? Are they proposing
new projects? These ideas should
be collected, recorded, and
vetted through your company's
internal Sustainability Program
Committee. Develop a process
to recognize employees for the
feedback that is used to improve
your company's sustainability
program.
*	 Customers and Potential
Customers: Monitor your market
place and pay attention to the
activities of your customers. Are
your sustainability operations
continuing to mesh with
their values? Is your company
offering your customers and
potential customers recordable
data from your sustainability
operations in a format they can
use to evaluate the added value
you provided to them as they
evaluate and document their own
efforts to reduce their carbon
footprint? One example of this
is an environmental product
declaration (EPD);2 learn more
about NAPA's new EPD at the
Annual Meeting in Orlando. An
asphalt mixture EPD allows road
owners and agencies to compare
the environmental impact of
different mixes by different
contractors - providing you a
greater ROI for sustainability
efforts at your plant.
*	 Community: Your sustainability
efforts have helped make you
a good neighbor and your
company has communicated
those efforts. Your plant has
reduced dust and noise emissions,
provides educational tours,
perhaps you have an employee

volunteer program where
employees volunteer their time
to participate in community
improvement activities. The
result has been an improved
relationship with community
members and an easier zoning
process; however, do you have a
process in place to address new
community concerns? Does
that process ensure that issues
are recorded and escalated so
that executive management is
aware and can consider action,
if appropriate? The social pillar
of sustainability can have an
economic impact on companies;
it should be treated as a serious
business issue.
* Suppliers: Just as you need to
monitor the market to ensure you
are meeting the needs of your
customers to assist them with
their requests for sustainable
products, services, and
documentation, your company
should periodically check in with
your suppliers to ensure that they
are aware of the progress of your
sustainability program, its goals,
and any challenges they might be
able to help you solve. Just as you
and your sustainability program
may help your customers reach
their sustainability goals, lean on
your suppliers and ask them to
help you meet your goals.
*	 Investors: You've provided
your investors with a corporate
sustainability report on the
progress of last year's program.
Depending on your company
size and structure, you also
have legal requirements as to
how you should legally interact
with this special group of
stakeholders. Some companies
may qualify for the Dow Jones
Sustainability Index. If there
are improvements to be made
that will increase next year's
sustainable ROI, communicate
