were not happy with their safety
statistics. They knew they could
do better. The company made the
decision to be more intentional
about developing a safety culture.
Part of the development of this
culture was to migrate from a
compliance- and discipline-based
program to a values, reward, and
recognition-based program.
The change has paid off in a
profound way; incident rates are
consistently improving, and there
is a lot of momentum behind the
safety culture now. Work-related
incidents year-to date are three,
down from ten last year; lost days
this year are zero, down from 107
last year; and restricted days this
year are 30, down from 231 last year.
In addition, Superior has
discovered other business
benefits from the culture change,

with employee retention and
recruitment being the biggest
one. "People want to work here,"
said Mitchell. "We provide a safe
place for them to work." According
to Mitchell, monetary savings
are a secondary benefit, but the
company has realized savings
through its captive insurance plan,
which Superior has invested back
into its safety program.
Mitchell said that the improved
safety culture has
definitely saved lives.
One example of this
occurred recently on
a paving job. Each
employee attends an
employee orientation,
which includes a
safety segment. One aspect
of the safety segment is training
on what to do if a dump truck

comes in contact with an overhead
power line. About 30 days after
the orientation, this situation
arose. Because of the training, the
driver knew to stay in the truck,
and the crew knew to stay away
from the truck. Everyone did the
right thing, and the incident was
resolved safely. Every employee
went home safe that night. That's
what a change in safety culture is
all about.
Mitchell has a long list of
examples Superior has
enacted to improve safety at
the company. They created
a safety logo - "Safety is for
Life," which is on all company
equipment and correspondence.
In addition, they have a highly
functional safety committee. The
committee develops topics for a
