We cannot overemphasize
the importance of providing
effective hazard awareness and
safety training to our most
important asset, our employees.
Many times safety training is focused on tasks
involving the highest degree of danger, i.e. trenching
and shoring, and working around traffic and other
regulations where OSHA should, and in fact does,
emphasize compliance. Training for tasks that
have parallel requirements in both the OSHA 1926
Construction Standards, as well as the 1910 General
Industry Standards for our asphalt mix plants is also
extensive. In addition to OSHA, state departments of
transportation have specifications for safety training,
such as flagger training and installing traffic control
devices. These are all important.
However, there are a host of additional hazards
and OSHA training requirements that many times
are overlooked in paving and related construction
operations. If you are not including training on these
topics, now would be a good time to update your
training program. The top ten are:

ork zones are dangerous
places. Injuries that
occur in or around the
work zone are usually serious in
nature, if not life threatening.
Because of the nature of the hazards
that our employees - our fellow
family members - are exposed to,
we must do all we can to ensure
their safety. We must make certain that our employees
have an understanding of the potential work zone
hazards and how to avoid them. To accomplish this, we
have a duty to provide our employees with all the proper
training, including work zone safety awareness training.

Specific Jobs, Specific Training
When working in a work zone, hazards come from several
areas. Of course, we have exposure from the motoring
public. They pose a hazard to our workers if they
actually enter our work zone; this is known as a work
zone intrusion. Additional hazards to our workers occur
when motorists ignore signage or flagger instructions.
Employees are also exposed to hazards inside our work
zone. These hazards come from our internal trucks
and equipment working inside the work zone in close
proximity to employees on foot.
Specific jobs associated with work zones require highly
specialized training; examples include employees that
