ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SECTION-TR AINING
TRAINING TO CREATE A SAFETY CULTURE
continued from page 39

I'm not referring to values that
hang from plaques on the wall
or in words on our websites. I'm
talking about real values. The way
we do things. What we really
care about.
And guess what? If safety is a
true core value - and training
is the foundation of your safety
program - training must be a core
value as well!

Creating a Training Culture
In order to grow and sustain a solid
safety culture, employees must be a
part of building that culture. This
is achieved through a culture of
learning, a culture of development,
and a culture of training.
Below are a few key components
of a training culture:
* Employees are expected to learn
and grow professionally.
* Training is not a once in a while
thing; it's a daily occurence.
* Learning is expected at every
level of the organization, from
the CEO down to each employee
in the field.

* Auditing of the training program
is conducted to ensure its
effectiveness.
When all levels see the value of
training - the organization will
grow in great ways.

Many Types of Training,
But One Aim
When it comes to safety training,
there are way too many possible
variations and types to mention
here. We could go on and on when
it comes to a list of possible training
curriculum; however it is important
to name a few:
Basics:
*	 Personal Protective Equipment
*	 Slips/Trips/and Falls
*	 Ladder Safety
Task Specific:
*	 Confined Space
*	Lockout-Tagout
*	 Fall Protection
Specialty:
*	 Preventing Asphalt Burns

*	 Handling Liquid Asphalt
*	 Welding/Cutting Safety
OSHA-required Annual
Refresher Training:
*	 Occupational Noise Exposure
*	 Hazardous Waste Operations and
Emergency Response
*	 Respiratory Protection
Clearly, this list is incomplete;
however it is a start. Also remember
OSHA requirements are the
minimum - you should always
strive to train above and beyond.
More about OSHA training can
be found in this issue of Asphalt
Pavement magazine in "OSHA's Top
Ten." In addition, more in depth
information on OSHA training
requirements can be found at
https://www.osha.gov/Publications/
osha2254.pdf.
But what is critical is to realize
the importance of training
employees, making training a value,
and equipping every employee with
the knowledge and skills they need
to do their jobs safely - every day
or night.
We owe it to ourselves, our
coworkers, our industry, our friends,
and our family to train for safety
as a company. Training provides
the preparation to ensure safe and
successful jobs. Every life lost is one
too many. Our industry is full of
tragic stories about the things that
can and do go wrong. Many of these
tragedies could've been prevented by
simply providing proper and regular
training. It's important for you,
your company, and our industry
to make training a true core value.
Lives depend on it, which is a
great investment with even greater
returns! AP
