ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SECTION-TR AINING

WORK ZONE SAFETY TRAINING
continued from page 37

conduct flagging operations, are
involved in setting up, managing
and monitoring traffic control; work
at night; operate equipment, etc. But
all employees who conduct any type
of work in or around a work zone
should participate in work zone safety
awareness training. This training
should include information on:
*	how to avoid equipment
blind spots
*	the importance of conducting a
daily safety huddle to discuss
the risks
*	spotter duties
*	proper hand signals
*	work zone intrusion prevention
devices (advanced warning
systems, rumble strips, crash
attenuators, etc.)
*	proper personal protective
equipment (PPE)
*	enhanced lighting for night work -
both personal and work zone

*	proper traffic control set-up
*	proper internal traffic control
plans that best separate
employees on foot from
equipment/trucks
*	the use of DOT conspicuity tape
on equipment
*	the importance of properly
functioning back-up alarms.

Additional Training & Resources
Of course, there are additional
training topics that work zone
employees should be exposed to in
addition to work zone awareness
safety training. Some of these may
include training on avoiding slips/
trips/falls; maintaining three points
of contact; first aid/CPR; PPE,
including hearing conservation,
overhead power line safety, and
hazard communication, in addition
to others. Another excellent
resource for road worker training is

the NAPA/ARTBA Roadway Safety
Program (version 11.1).
In order to lower the risks
posed by the motoring public,
our internal traffic or other
work-related hazards, we must be
continually vigilant in providing
our employees with a safe
work environment. We cannot
compromise their safety by failing
to provide them with all the tools
and information necessary to best
protect them from harm. It is vital
that we take the time to give our
employees - our family members
- all the information they need
so that at the end of the day, we
can send them home safely to
their other family waiting for
them at home. AP
