2016 PoRk MasteRs announced:
Considered the Oscars of the food world, the James Beard
Foundation (JBF) Awards honor the country's top culinary talent and celebrates the role of cuisine in television. And now,
eastern North Carolina's Chef Vivian Howard has joined an
elite group of chefs honored with one of the coveted awards.
Named in late April as Outstanding Personality for A Chef's
Life in the JBF's annual Book, Broadcast and Journalism Awards,
Howard beat out Pati Jinich of "Pati's Mexican Table" on PBS and
Andrew Zimmerman of "Bizarre Foods" on the Travel Channel.
"I am thrilled for Vivian and Ben, their family and the talented group of people who produce the show," said NCPC's
Deborah Johnson upon learning of the award. "We are proud
to be a founding sponsor of A Chef's Life, and we love how the
show and Chef and the Farmer restaurant feature pork in traditional ways but also in dishes most of us could never imagine."
Celebrating Southern foods and rural traditions, and also
sharing what it's like to run a restaurant while raising a family,
the show is in production for its fourth season. The Peabody
and Emmy-winning show is directed by North Carolinian
Cynthia Hill and airs nationally on PBS.
Howard's next step in the culinary world is the publication
of her first cookbook this fall. Titled Deep Run Roots: Stories and
Recipes from My Corner of the South, it will offer recipes for every
cooking interest and skill level.
Since 2006, National Hog Farmer has recognized pioneers of
the swine business through a program called Masters of the
Pork Industry. The intent of the effort, according to its program
originator Dale Miller, was to feature forward thinkers who
left a mark in the industry. Some 65 individuals have been
honored to date.
This year the publication selected North Carolina's
Moe Mohesky as one of its Pork Masters. With more than six
decades of pork production experience, Mohesky shares his
story and his business focus in the May issue of the industry
Mohesky served on the National Pork Board and was president of the National Pork Producers Council in 1995-96. He also
served as chair of the U.S. Meat Export Federation in 2003-04.
