NC Pork Report - Summer 2017 - 6

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

We are the ambassadors
of our industry

I

Mark Daughtry
2017 NCPC President

"We are using
science and
technology to
improve our
food production
practices to
continue to provide
the safest and
most wholesome
pork in the world."

T'S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT YOU
are already reading the summer
edition of the N.C. Pork Report!
This year is moving quickly and
doesn't appear to be slowing down
any time soon.
This spring was a blur of activity, both
on the farm and at the N.C. Pork Council.
The staff at the N.C. Pork Council, particularly Angie Maier and Andy Curliss,
worked hard on our behalf to pass a
new law that will better protect North
Carolina farmers from frivolous nuisance
lawsuits by clarifying the type of damages that can be awarded in such cases.
This bill enjoyed strong support from
several other organizations, including
the N.C. Farm Bureau, N.C. Farm Families
and N.C. Chamber of Commerce, which
strongly encouraged lawmakers to support this legislation. Indeed, this legislation benefits not only the pork industry
but it also helps Christmas tree farmers,
trout farmers, strawberry growers, cattle
ranchers and everyone else involved in
North Carolina agriculture.
I was proud to be part of the large
delegation of farmers who traveled to
Raleigh to show our support for House
Bill 467 when it was voted on in the N.C.
House. The gallery was filled with concerned farmers and workers, providing a
visible signal of how deeply our farmers
cared about this bill. Several farmers
also spoke before legislative committees
to explain the importance of this legislation and participated in a video series
that allowed us to effectively deliver our
message through social media.

6 | SUMMER 2017 | NC PORK RE PORT | NCPORK.ORG

Thank you to everyone who helped
support our efforts and were willing to
share your perspectives on this issue.
It takes tremendous courage to stand
up for something you believe in when
there's vocal opposition. And there was
plenty of opposition - from trial lawyers, activist groups and others.
We are extremely pleased that HB 467
is now North Carolina law. It took a lot of
hard work to get the bill passed, and we
took some lumps in the media along the
way. The opposition tried to portray our
industry as dominated by large-scale
industrial farms and led by a "powerful pork lobby." They attacked us for
not caring about those who live near
our farms and grossly mischaracterized
how our farms operate. We know that
nothing could be further from the truth,
but we must continue to overcome those
misperceptions.
I know that you strive to be a good
neighbor to those who live nearby, and
I challenge all of us to continue serving as good ambassadors for the North
Carolina pork industry. We continue to
train and educate our grower partners
and workforce on animal welfare and
environmental stewardship. We care
about our animals and our people. We
are using science and technology to
improve our food production practices
to continue to provide the safest and
most wholesome pork in the world. We
do this every day.
Thank you for your hard work and
dedication for making North Carolina
pork the best.
