Youth Focus Employees Honored for Education Efforts T eaching children where their food comes from is a vital part of creating an understanding of farming and food production. Two Smithfield employees made that their charge, and their efforts earned them and their division Smithfield's most prestigious honor - the Smithfield President's Award. Neill Westerbeek and Mary Graham DeVane, grower relations managers with the East Central Division, recognized the need for information on pork production to be included in educational curriculum. Working with an existing program and materials from the National Pork Board called Producers, Pigs & Pork, Westerbeek and DeVane approached Duplin County schools to implement the program. It is now a part of the fourth grade curriculum. Producers, Pigs & Pork includes a teacher's resource guide leading them through five lessons: where does my food come from, where does my pork come from, how is my environment being protected, how is pork good for me, and what's all the buzz about pork. Each lesson includes interactive activities, videos, vocabulary words and the opportunity to invite guest speakers such as a pork producer, veterinarian, chef, nutritionist or grocer. These guest speakers provide students the opportunity to learn directly from the people who do these jobs every day. The next step is to expand the curriculum to other counties. Also, Westerbeek and DeVane are working with the National Pork Board to create a website dedicated to Producers, Pigs & Pork to allow the program to be taught using Smart Boards, making the program more up-to-date, cost-effective and more easily accessible.
