NC Pork Report - Fall 2017 - 15

Presidential term
leaves Archer grateful
for the experience
Role took her all over the U.S. and the world
and broadened her view of the industry
AN ARCHER OF ARCHER FARMS
in Goldsboro recently completed
a one-year term as president of
the 15-member National Pork
Board. We caught up with her to
see what she learned while holding key
roles in a national pork organization.

How would you describe
your year as president of the
National Pork Council?
My year as president of the National
Pork Board was busy but so very gratifying. American pig farmers trust the
National Pork Board to use their checkoff dollars wisely. It is wonderful to be
part of an organization that works so
hard to support farmers all over the
country. I put in a lot of air miles during my time as president but along
with the time and travel came amazing opportunities.

How many miles do you think
you've traveled with NPB?
Where did you travel?
I know I've traveled enough miles to
circumnavigate the globe, probably a
couple of times. I've visited most of the
states in this country as well as Japan,
China, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and
France. I will forever be grateful for the
opportunities that the National Pork
Board afforded me. I've said it before
and I'll say it again. No matter how
much of my time and energy I give to
the pork industry through my time
with NPB, I get much more in return.

Serving on the Executive Committee has its perks. Jan traveled around the world
representing the National Pork Board and U.S. pork producers. These are some
of her favorite sights from her travels.

I'll never complain about the time or
travel. It's been an honor and a joy.

What have been the
highlights of serving on the
Executive Committee? What
do you consider as your
greatest accomplishment?
I read recently that the biggest responsibility of a board of directors is to hire
a good CEO. I might embellish that a bit
but, in essence, I think that is correct.

I was fortunate to be part of the team
that hired Bill Even, the CEO of the
National Pork Board during my tenure on the Executive Committee. The
board of directors helps guide the CEO
but it is really the CEO who takes the
strategic plan and mobilizes his or her
team to execute it. Bill has done a great
job and made some hard decisions in
the short time that he has been at the
helm. I have already learned so much
from him.
