NC Pork Report - Fall 2017 - 16

You didn't just serve one year
on the Executive Committee
and you aren't finished yet.
You had to sacrifice a lot of
time away from both your
family and your farm. What's
your advice to someone
wanting to get involved
on the national level?
There are a lot of ways to be involved
on the national level. Every producer
has a part of their job about which they
are especially passionate; it might be

animal welfare, public health, sustainability or any one of a number of aspects
of farming that producers have to
understand. My recommendation is to
pick out that thing that really resonates
and volunteer to help with that. It could
be one of the nine standing committees
or perhaps a task force that convenes
to address an issue and then disbands.
If a producer can give a little time or
a lot of time, there is an opportunity
to serve. What I will guarantee is that
no matter how much effort you put into

the National Pork Board, you will get
more back.

It is the responsibility of each board
member to look at the industry as a
whole and focus on all producers of all
sizes and production types, in every
part of the country. As a board member,
however, I am able to communicate the
concerns of our state to the board and
also communicate what is happening
on a national level with producers in
North Carolina. As the second largest
pork producing state in the nation it is
important that we keep those lines of
communication open.

What I will
guarantee is
that no matter
how much effort
you put into the
National Pork
Board, you will
get more back.

I am always gratified to see how smart,
dedicated, honorable and hard-working
our producers are. While it was not a
surprise to me, I think people are often
taken aback by how smart pig farmers
are. We are early adopters of technology
and the use of technology frees us up to
focus on animal care and sustainability.
What I am surprised by is the innovation that farmers have developed to do
their jobs better.

Has your perspective on
the industry changed?
I think it has broadened. Sometimes,
when working on our farms we get so
