comfortable one. If we are going to
stay in business we have to accept that
change and learn how to communicate
with the people who are buying our
product. We can't expect them to trust
us if they don't know us!

Get involved!
Jan recommends picking a part of your
job that you are passionate about and
getting involved in a committee or task
force related to that aspect. You can use
the We CareSM principles as a starting
place and find a related committee on
the state or national level.
The We CareSM initiative is a joint
effort of the Pork Checkoff, through the
National Pork Board, and the National
Pork Producers Council, to help demonstrate that producers are accountable
to established ethical principles and
animal well-being practices.
By affirming these principles,
America's pork producers acknowledge
their responsibility to:
* Produce safe food
* Protect and promote animal
well-being
* Ensure practices to protect public
health
* Safeguard natural resources in all of
our practices
* Provide a work environment that is
safe and consistent with our other
ethical principles
* Contribute to a better quality of life
in our communities

What do you see as the
biggest challenge the industry
in North Carolina is facing?

As a farmer, my
job does not end at
my farm gate. Our
product goes around
our country and
around the world.

The list of challenges we face as farmers is long. Public perception of our
industry has to be at, or very near the
top. There is so much misinformation
about pig farms in North Carolina
that trying to get the truth out seems
overwhelming sometimes. Farmers
are busy caring for their pigs and their
land and they don't always have the
time to correct inaccuracies or defend

themselves against attacks. It's imperative that we all step up to defend and
support our industry. There are a lot
of small ways that farmers can help.
Something as simple as engaging a
consumer at the meat case or talking
to folks at church about the We Care
ethical principles that we follow. Every
little bit helps!

entrenched in our day-to-day activities
we forget how big our industry is. As
a farmer, my job does not end at my
farm gate. Our product goes around our
country and around the world. Most
people have no idea what we do. It used
to be OK to just raise our pigs and sell
our pork. Today's consumer requires
that we are more engaged with them.
This is a huge shift and not always a
