LEARNING THE POLITICAL SIDE
Hartman is a senior at N.C. State this year, majoring in agricultural science.
A political future is something that interests him even more
after this internship.
"I do want to work on the legislative and advocacy side of
agriculture," Hartman said.
Hartman's future goals are two-fold: he wants to go into a
career in agriculture policy while staying active in the family farm.
"Agriculture needs as many advocates as it can get," he said.
"I know quite a bit about the production side of agriculture,
but getting in there and working the actual policy was eyeopening. I am probably going to try to pursue another policy
internship next summer to give me a few more months to
learn from somebody else and go from there."
Angie Maier, director of government affairs and sustainability for the N.C. Pork Council, said Hartman was a natural
at the job and a quick study. "I have no doubt that Brandon
will find success in pursuing a career in public policy if that's
what he wants to do," said Maier. "My only concern is that he
will try to take my job!" she said with a chuckle.

As part of his internship, Brandon took a tour of Eastern
North Carolina with National Pork Board Regional Manager
Stephen Herring (right) and NPB summer intern, Austin Pueschel
of Iowa. They are pictured at Goldsboro Milling Company.

EDUCATION IS THE KEY
Hartman is one of eight students selected to participate in
the Adolph Warren Family Leadership Program, funded in
the name of Adolph Warren, by his daughter and son-in-law.
Warren is a life-long educator and 1952 graduate of the College
of Agriculture and Life Science at N.C. State University.
"It's really an eye-opening experience," Hartman said. "I've
seen what goes on day in and day out. Seeing the things that
the ag lobbyists do, how much they work to make it where we,
as farmers, can do what we do. Also, I realize how important
it is to have a champion that comes to legislation, somebody
that's willing to fight for you and speak up for the industry."
With so many rules and changes in agriculture, Hartman
is well-aware that he could play a big role through legislation.
"Education is a big part of it," he said. "There is a lot of misunderstanding. A lot of what I saw going on was education
as much as anything else, to actually sit down and try to get
people to understand - as far as the industry's perspective -
why we do the things we do and why certain things should
be certain ways. I think ag education as far as legislators and
anybody willing to listen is vital."

FAMILY SUPPORT
He admits enjoying working in the air conditioning instead
of in the fields this summer. It also took a while to adjust to
a later start time in the office rather than on the farm. Still,
he appreciated the experience and all he learned.
"Both of my parents always asked what I was doing and the
typical, 'are you paying attention?,' " Hartman chuckled. "My
parents are big supporters in what I have done. Part of it was
they wanted to know what I was doing, but they also want to
know what is going on in the industry."
A love of livestock agriculture runs deep for Hartman and
his family, who headed home to work in the tobacco fields

Brandon at the NCSU Beef Unit.
at the end of the summer. His grandfather had a contract to
grow hogs for a Greensboro packer in the 1960s, so pigs aren't
completely foreign to the family.
"It's great to have that environment when I go home people
understand what I am talking about, they want to hear more
about it," he said.
